Shelf liner/Contact Paper for Substrate

I have used paper towels for quite some time but my beardie has begun eating it. I removed it but I still need something to cover the bare glass. Would Shelf Liner/Contact Paper work? If not what would?
Btw, I've already tried reptile carpet, it just didn't work for me and his nails kept getting stuck.

I use slate tile in the bottom of my little one's tank. Plus, it works wonders on keeping her nails trimmed down. I do have some of it covered with some fleece I had, just to make some of it more soft and comfortable.
I tried the carpet and it was a disaster to keep clean. The tile I just take piece by piece out if it gets dirty or anything, really easy to clean.

I use shelf-liner in my tank and it's a God send! My beardie lost a nail on the ReptiCarpet, and that crap got tossed. I tried felt and I hated having to wash it. The shelf-liner wipes clean and looks nice, plus it's easier on her nails than the tile! She could never get enough traction!

I mentioned to my vet that I was trying it, and she said it should be totally safe! My girl loves it and I love how easy it is to clean!

Yeah I have heard of people using it. Personally I also use slate tiles now, no problems with traction as the tiles are slate which is rough texture, as smackey said its great as it also keeps nails trimmed. Easy to clean too.
