School Show-and-Tell

My daughter asked her teacher if she can bring our beardie to school for show-and-tell. We have brought pets in the past to the school for show-and-tell and so have other children. First, she replied that she did not know what a bearded dragon was, and when my daughter told her, she said no because someone could be allergic to him. I have never heard of anyone being allergic to a beardie. They do not have dander or shed like furred pets. I could possibly see someone being allergic to the beardie saliva or poop, but I cannot picture one of the classmates eating either during the show-and-tell. Has anyone ever heard of an allergic reaction to a beardie by touching him or even just being in the same room as him?

Thank you

i have heard of someone developing a skin rash from their beardie. unsure what caused it.

but i highly doubt a child would be allergic unless they were allergic to EVERYTHING, in which case they should be in a bubble. there is less of a chance of being allergic to a beardie than there is to a cat or dog. if someone brought in a hamster (a filthy little rodent in comparison) and no one had a reaction to that, a bearded dragon will be no problem.

i know the kids would LOVE it, and everyone would need to be required to wash their hands if they decide to touch the beardie. a letter could also be sent home to let parents know a live animal is coming in, and if they are too worried they can keep the kid home. (or come in to see the beardie too)

it sounds more like the teacher doesn't like lizards and just doesn't want it in her classroom.

Bunnyrut, I also thought that it had more to do with not wanting the lizard in the classroom, but I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt. The more I think about it, the more I think you are right.

The only rash I get from my beardies is when they scratch my neck on accident. Never heard of allergies to any reptiles before.

Your poor daughter.. All she wanted to do was show her pet, sounds like the teacher just doesn't want to have a lizard in the class room.
I have brought in our beardie(who also happens to be a baby) for both my kids show and tell and let the boys describe Boba Fetts routine, both teachers were absolutely ecstatic to have such a "unique" pet in there class to teach the kids new things.

I think she heard lizard and went "Ew, gross." I feel like that is more of a principal's decision, not a teacher's.

Thank you for your replies, everyone. We have brought all sorts of miscellaneous rodents into her class in the last couple of years, including a filthy little rodent  (hilarious description, bunnyrut). Oh, well. The school year is close to being over. Perhaps next year she will have a teacher that is more open to allowing her students to participate in new experiences.

OMG the teacher didn't know what a bearded dragon was?!

i know! people call Mr Dargon an Iguana all the time!

Grr! As a teacher-to-be, I can't wait to bring pets like lizards into the classroom. At my old school, one teacher had a leopard gecko, frogs and other animals, so I know it's possible. Even for my action research project, I wrote about having a hamster in the classroom. This is one future teacher who will likely bring a beardie into the classroom and let his students do it as well for show-and-tell!

Uberglasses that is great! Nothing bothers me more than an adult who projects his or hear fears and insecurities upon children without pressing reasons. Of course, I am not speaking about fears of traffic or anything like that where one must teach the children. In my experience with children, most are not afraid of bugs, spiders, unusual pets from the beginning unless they have had a bad experience. Most of the time they learn fear from their parents or other important adults in their lives. One example: I was walking my medium sized dog. A little girl wanted to pet her and was all keen. My dog, being used to children, played the "I am a sweet doggy role" perfectly. The mom started to get all upset that the girl was afraid of dogs and did not want to be around them. At first I wondered if mom was speaking about the same child and in no way did I push my dog upon the child. Needles to say that the very keen curious little girl, within a couple of minutes, turned into a shy, fearful child, not because my dog was in anyway dangerous or threatening (her tail was wagging, and she was sitting nicely), but because children will react to their parents' emotions and reactions.

Very well put there! It drives me insane!! I try to keep an arrangement of unusual animals in my house just so my kids grow up knowing that theres nothing to fear from animals, Of course I am an animal lover so its also partly bc I cant help myself. I love teaching kids about my animals and how to care for them ect, I don't know how many moms and dads tell me that their kid wants to come back to my house as often as possible, bc its fun to play with the animals(and the parents are happy bc I make it fun to learn about the animals) :D next animal I wanna get is a crested gecko but I wanna do all the research I can first, my bf is thinkin bout getting me 1 for my birthday in june

When/If I plan on having kids, they will grow up with all kinds of animals. How I would have loved being a kid and saying I had a real pet dragon!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
