im gonna be building new cages soon. 2 or 3 for a rack. each gonna be 4x2x2. i think i wanna put a sandbox in just so they can have some fun and dig. do any of you do this? also i am thinking of putting screening over the top instead of venting the sides. that way itll vent, and i wont have to run my own electric into the cages? would that be enough ventilation? thanks for any answers.

A screen top should be enough to vent the cage...that's what I have on mine. Many members do have sandboxes, it would be a good idea to be able to remove the sand box during feedings (if you feed while inthe viv) just to ensure a cricket doesn't jump in the sand and have your bd get a mouthfull along with the cricket.

I recently put a sandbox in Calypso's viv. She doesn't really use it. I put the sand in a cat litter box for easy removal.

Screen tops are inferior to solid tops with lights mounted on the inside. The reason is simple science. Hot air sucks up moisture, hot air rises. The hot air is replaced by the dry cool air in your room. You'll need a higher watt bulb to achieve desired temps and the rapid loss of the moisture in your cage, due to the air movement, will greatly increase the rate of moisture loss in your dragon (dehydration).

Sandboxes are not a good idea either. Sand is worthless to a dragon. Soft sand is even useless to most true desert reptiles. Beardies don't dig for fun :) They dig because their instincts tell them to dig. Their instincts could be telling them to dig for several reasons. One is dehydration due to bone dry environments. Dry soft sand is almost as useless to a beardie as tile is. It can provide security (if setup a certain way, but not aid in shedding, hydration, or nesting.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
