Was gonna use sand for Des but, I can't seem to find anything good about it. The sand I was gonna use is the Zoomed Vita-Sand, it seems to me sand isn't good for em due to impaction. Now I do have a question though. Bearded Dragons live in the desert region of Australia, there is sand there naturally, Bearded Dragons naturally would consume some of this sand from a hatch-ling to an adult. (LOL Des just pooped on the back of my chair. o_O) Anyways where was I... oh yeah, So are there impacted, paralyzed dragons roaming around everywhere in the wild?

Actually, the desert in Aus. is called a desert because of the ack of yearly rainfall. The ground is hard-pack clay, similar to the look of the Great Salt Flats in Utah here in the US. They may take in a bit of cay here and there, but no sand. Tile is the best bet for your babies. It helps to trim their toenails, or you can go with vinyl tile, as long as there's no adhesive on them (someone pointed out to me the adhesive kind may give off fumes under a heat lamp.) Or you can get reptile carpet. But sand is a big no-no. Hope this helps you!

Also, the lifespan of wild animals is drastically shorter than our pets. Wild beardies don't die of old age. The average lifespan of a wild beardie is under 2 years.

Thank you Jess4921, that was very informative, hmm I hate the way the carpet sits in Des's tank. I had to tape around it so the crickets couldn't hide between it and the tank. Also kinda funny no one commented on his pooping while I was typing this post. LOL

"Zoomed Vita-Sand"

for a demo

take some of that sand put it in a small paper cup, put some water in there enough to get it wet
wait overnight or till it dries, it sure won't be sand anymore.

not something I'd want passing through me,

Tile is easy to clean and cost friendly

clay can get hard. shale is basically harden dried out clay. It would have to be moist to retain is soft malleable texture. That could raise humidity. I imagine under the basking lights, it would be just a matter of time before it got baked by the heat. clay is pretty much wet sticky dirt.

When it comes down to it, everything loose has a risk. there are no exceptions. no one can tell you it's 100% safe, because it's not. It's just like with seat belts, you might go your whole life without wearing one and never have a problem, but people are hurt and killed all the time because they don't wear one. You can heed the warnings and go the safe route, or go for looks and hope it works out for ya.

I don't know where the notion of inland Oz being hard packed clay came from or where it started but the claypans only occur around dried up lakes. For Inland Australia to be solely clay pans it would mean that inland Oz was once a lake almost half the size of continental US. This simply is not true. The clay pans make up a very minute part of BD habitat.

Calm down it is a question. Response seems kind of rude. Anyways thank you guys for the input, I am not going "for looks" per my aspect anyways just don't think my BD would have grown up in the wild surrounded by carpet which is taped to a tank. OK?!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
