Sad news, positive for Adenovirus

My dragon, destro, has been diagnosed with adenovirus. His health is critical, despite multiple vet visits, extra care techniques, and LOTS of love. I will be "setting him free" on saturday. I will bring him to the vet to be humanly euthanized. This costs alot more than I thought, and was wondering if there Is a more peaceful method of putting this little man out of his misery. Im gonna miss him so much


Please let me know, if you know, any humane ways of helping Destro along

I am so sorry to hear that your beardie has Adenovirus.
Honestly, I believe euthanasia is the most humane way of putting an animal down. I know it can be costly, but it is going to be your best option.
Again, I am sorry you are having to go through this with your beardie.

I'm so sorry to hear about your baby. What a tough decision to make.

Has the vet given you multiple options? Would it be less expensive if you were to take him home & bury him yourself? Could you call around to see if other vets offer different pricing? You may not have to go to a reptile vet if you are already sure that this is the best thing for your dragon.

Either way, i agree that taking him to the vet to set him free is his best chance to go peacefully.

thanks for the response guys and gals. im gonna euthanize him, ill make it as peaceful as possible, then im gonna bring him home and make a nice spot in my yard where my cat holly was burried, where the sun always shines! uvb for eternity!

Hello,

I am sorry to hear about your dragon with Adeno virus. How did you get it diagnosed, a blood test or biopsy?
I started an organization in 2007 to try & raise awareness on Adeno virus with breeding, & owners, but unfortunately, most breeders simply don't want to test. I am sorry that you had a dragon who has this virus. A lot of the dragons make it, but a lot of them don't.
How old is he? What are some of his health issues? Is he eating on his own, etc? What all has been done to help his health?
While there is no cure, a lot of supportive care can always be done & a lot of times, they can overcome the illness when their immune system develops better when they get older. Are you sure there is no way he can be saved? Sorry, just wondering & would love to try & help, if possible. Adeno virus is an ailment that affects more dragons than people realize.

Hello,

No, Adeno virus cannot be spread to humans. It is usually species specific, also. Not a lot of information is known about the transmission, but as much as we can tell it is predominantly spread by fecal to oral, but not necessarily by vertical transmission. It is not airborne, however, that we know of.

hey tracie, can a bearded dragon adenovirus be trasmitted to a savannah monitor from using the same tank... and tank only. i threw away the decor and everything else.
