I need to vent, just got back from petco (grrrr) had to get puppies some food, anyway i went to the reptile sections see if they got any cool new hides in or something my handsome little men might like. well i look at the baby beardies they have forsale maybe 4 weeks old all skinny looking with their eyes closed well i noticed some of them were covered in something green looks like food coloring so i grab the little girl who works in the section *name tag says reptile specialist* (my hinny) so i ask the girl whats all over them she proceeds to tell me they had them on green hermit crab sand in the back and it died them green :evil: . i like to flip out start :x yelling theyre not suppose to be on sand you ***** much less colored one,thats when i realize they're are on sand now needless to say i loose it she tells me shes a breeder she knows what shes doing and knows sands bad but the corp office says they have to put them on that. Not only were they on sand but the temp in the tank was 75degrees and the humidity was at 80percent. What the hell, these people are *****s how can you stand there and put these poor innocent babies in danger because your corp office says so. and you call yourself a specialist and a breeder. K well i go to get my men some worms till the rept show this weekend hubby opens up a container of wax worms that werent refregerated and moths fly out, hummm lets see container says refregerated must me to put it in the fridge right not at petco so i tell the "specialist" i want giant mealworms just a treat for now till sat getting some pw then she hands me minis again what the hell by this time im about to choke the girl well now im checking out she tells me she breeds dragons hers are the best around i should really get one from her. humm let me think :shock: uhh NOOO, I :shock: mean i have tattos but no are on my forhead and say ***** needless to say i will be buying my puppies food from the local feed store from now on. shesse some people are *****s.

Actually the corp. office changed it and it is now the individual petstores decision to either put them on sand or reptile carpet. So she was even further BSing you.

if you dont want to read it, heres the basics.

they feed their babies that are only up to 8 inches 10-15 ADULT crickets a day. dont they know that can cause major impaction?
she said that paper towels is a big problem, and they have their babies on sand. the babies have virtually no food in their tank. not sure their getting UVB light. their all thin, so the one i got is too.

overrall *****. period.

Im going to try and get a job at petsmart because they actually know about their animals. i might just call them and ask them what they feed their babies. if they say small crickets, im going to congratulate them. if they say the feed them small ones because big ones can cause impaction, i'll congratulate them and tell them that they are much more informed than petco and next time i go there give them a high five or somethingP)

Petsmart is much better than Petco, but they are still a business and they (or the one near me does) keep their beardies in to small of a cage and together.
Every time I go into the Petco here I cry because the ferrets are drownin' in their own ****.
I hate Petco.... and Wal-Mart.... Both with a passion, Petco more though. :O I ramble to much.

My closest Petco is a few hours away, I'm glad I have other options from all the things I hear I'm afraid to go into one.

It's not just Petco and Petsmart unfortunately. I have a local private owned pet store that I was getting my crickets from and I had to stop going there because I felt so bad for the little bearded dragons that they had in there. They have had them there for the last two months and I swear they haven't grown even 1/4 of an inch. They have them on sand (very dirty) the lighting is all wrong (just a colored light), way too big a cricket when they have any in there... It was just too sad for me and when I said anything I got treated like I didn't know what I was talking about. I've been ordering Merlin's crickets online primarily so that I don't have to see those two little dragons fading away. Sometimes, I think it would be best if exotic animals were not available for sale in pet stores but only through breeders.

It sucks, but it really just depends on the store you go into. I'm the reptile specialist at my Petco, and it seems like I'm the only one who knows what I'm talking about. We have a great staff though, and an excellent animal coordinator though. I'm also on top of everything. I've been into PLENTY of pet stores, even some "reptile only" stores and let me say that most people aren't educated. It's sad really. I also firmly believe it's up to the person who's buying the reptile to know what they're doing! A little research goes a loooong way!!

i am the same way except i work at petsmart lol

but yes i am pretty much the only one who knows alot, the other petcare wrokers are ok and i like the petcare manager( she even says she really wishes we didnt sell alot of the animals we sell b/c of the people that come in) the other managers treat me like i am dumb though
and i have wroked there for a little over 2 years and i would bet i have not had ONE customer that actually did extensive research and knew what they were doing

they all expect the reptile people to know EVERYTHING and the customers somehow expect to remember an entire novel of a speach about their care when i am just saying it in the 15 minutes they give me

that is what i hate people who do not do research :evil:
