We have 6 beardies and we went the complete beardie safety way & have blocked off everywhere a beardie could go. We have 6 beardies and they all get their time out. My hubby bought bright blue plastic covered corregated cardboard and we cut pieces out & have them arranged so beardies stay in the living room, dining room or 2nd bedroom (my office). The only time we couldn't find a beardie for awhile was when Issy, our youngest at 17 mo, climbed the curtains beside the stereo that is also blocked off and jumped down to behind the stereo. I tell you, we looked for her for about an hour. Then my hubby thought to look behind the stereo, calling her name. And what did we find than Issy popping her head out from under the stereo with that look "What do you want!!". Took us awhile to get her out from behind there, she was very proud of herself; we've since blocked off access to the curtain, as 2 other of our beardies tried the same thing. Otherwise they each get roaming time. We don't watch over them constantly, but check up on them every 5 min or so, unless we're already in the living room, then they get constant surpervision. Our beardies don't like each other, so they get out separately. Our apartment looks so weird with this blue stuff all over the living room, dining room and outside around the balcony (that's so they can each get some real sunshine outside when it's warm & sunny. It worked out quite well, they get to run around and climb furniture which gives them lots of exercises. Issy is our beat climber, she loves to climb up on our hassocks and has even gotten into jumping from hassock to hassock, about a 5" jump. She's fearless, except for crows and airplanes. The other 5 all love to roam, too, they just don't climb as much as Issy does. As a result of this roaming and running around, their muscle tone is great.
We've also got screens set up across the entry to the living room and dining room, so they can't get into the kitchen or bedrooms where there are LOTS of places to hide, like under our bed, dresser, etc. We've had beardies for almost 4 years, so these safety steps were thought out over a long period of time.
I'm glad we did that, our beardies just love to be out of their vivs. We still make sure they bask for a few hours after eating and baths and poops are done before they're allowed out, makes for much less cleaning of carpets.
Enjoy your beardie, they are such great pets and are intelligent.. They have good memories, too. They all feel that if they're allowed to do something once, it's part of their daily routine. So being a good beardie slave is essential 'cause they won't give up what they've been allowed to do.
