I am getting a bearded dragon in about a week. I have slate tile as substrate and a disinfected rock for basking. As far a I know, this particular dragon has been on wood chippings all its life.

Is the change in texture going to make it extra uncomfortable?

Could this all stone terrain actually be harmful?

Should I add some wood for some variation in texture?

Am I being ridiculous?

You can think of it in 2 ways, if you leave your tank the way it is then it will be a huge change for the beardie, but it will get used to it faster. You could add wood to help him/her get used to the new environment with something familare but the wood chips arent very safe at all. If I were you I'd leave it. The stone wouldnt be harmfull at all unless there are sharp edges that could scratch or cut your beardie. If you want it to have different texture you could add a wash cloth or piece of blanket for him/her to cuddle up on.

Thanks for the advice. I think that I'll add a hand towel to the bottom of its hide, so that the edges stretch out some distance into the surrounding floorspace.

You could also add some sort of climbing branch if there's room. They like to climb and it would give it some wood texture. The cloth is a good idea they often like to sleep on something soft. I would also advise against wood chips.

I was actually thinking of adding a hammock. From what I hear, they're quite popular with the creatures.

Any thoughts on this?

Since your new dragon will be going thru relocation stress I would opt for the total change instead of a few minor changes as they will stress as well. A hammock or even a soft flannel blankie for sleeping is good
