OH, I get it. I use a huge syringe to do some so I don't have to remove them. 'cause they always spill when you put them back in.

I wanted to share an amusing anecdote with fellow roach people, but didn't want to start a new thread, so I'm posting here.

I was just taking care of my roaches... I put in some ground up off-brand cheerios and fish food and then I went to get some veggies. When I came back with some chopped up carrots and greens, on adult female roach had moved to the dry food and was munching away. I put the chopped-up carrots in on the other side of the bin and that roach waited until my hand was out of the bin and she immediately ran full-speed across the bin and started eating a piece of carrot.

It was really cute in a way... but it made me wonder, how did she know that was going to be something better than what she was eating already? Did she smell the veggies?

And now there's a whole pile of roaches on the veggies. I guess they smell them.

haha, that's pretty cool. and yeah, i figure that they must be able to smell - or something like it. it doesn't take long after i put oranges or apples in the bin before they are all over them.

Albino or just freshly molted? I've seen them white after molting, but never like this. Gonna see if it stays.

i agree definitely freshly molted. i actually found a freshly molted adult male the other day. i didn't hesitate to snatch that up to feed to falkor. she loved it. lots of meat and no crunch ;-)

So the last time I sorted out my main bin I pulled all 320 females and adult males out. That was on October 12! Well today just over a month later I sorted out an other 180 adult females and 87 adult males. Here are some pics.

Not too bad for just a month of nymphs maturing. I have also fed off over 150 males out of the bin in the bast month. Looks like I will be starting my 4th colony here soon!

What is an easy way to separate roaches? I have seen the "drill holes in a bucket & dump them in" technique but I'm wondering if there's any other ways. I want to separate out the adults from the babies and see what I have after four months. I'm thinking of just shaking the heck out of my egg crates and paper towel rolls until they all fall out, then separating them by hand, but if there's pregnant mommies I don't want to traumatize them into dropping their egg sacks.

Ideas?

i tried doing it by hand just once hahaha, the drilled holes is deffinately the best method, it sucks drilling hundreds of holes, but it makes it super easy!! and you can do it for different sized roaches too

When I separate out all of the adults I do it by hand. You will not make the females drop an egg sack unless they are in the process of laying and moving the eggs into their pouch. If you see the egg sack sticking out then do not bother them. If they are holding eggs for incubation you are not going to make them discard it by moving them by hand. This is the only way I have found to move just the adults because some of the large nymphs are just as large as the adults. Picking them by hand also lets you count what you have at the same time.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
