Today was a horribly sad day for me. Cyrus, the only baby I kept from the Kora x Diablo breeding died this morning.

I was off work yesterday, home with the animals all day and nothing out of the ordinary happened. Everyone ate well, got baths, and cages were cleaned. Cyrus was completely normal, until I found multiple piles of vomitted superworms, crickets, and salad in his cage. He was obviously not feeling well. As the day progressed, he got worse. Completely limp, eyes closing and sunken in, and a COMPLETELY BLACK beard, neck, and entire stomach. I've never seen such a black dragon....his body color was his normal bright, beautiful self, but his underside was completely jet back. Not stress marks...BLACK. I kept him warm and did what I could until work opened in the morning. (Luckily I'm a vet tech so I took him in with me first thing in the morning.)

We started him on oxygen, gave him fluids under the skin, did a quick xray, and decided to give him some baytril too. We don't treat exotics at my vet, but we did the best we could and the vets I work with were very willing to do what they could. Xray was inconclusive except for a very strange difference in his right and left lung lobes. One side was very large, where the other was deflated and smaller. We weren't sure if he aspirated something after vomitting the day before, or some fluid was in his lungs. For all we know it could have been normal, but it did look strange. At this point he was still completely limp, not moving a muscle. He would show some response when the tail/legs were pressed, but not much.

We did all we could for him. It burned my heart to see him suffer but I couldn't put a once healthy, happy 5 month old dragon to sleep just yet. He made the decision on his own instead. At about 10 this morning he gave up his fight. I still have no idea what caused this, not even the slightest clue. Everything in his enclosure was perfect, he was happy and eating and running around like his normal self all day yesterday afternoon. I've wracked my brains trying to think what could have caused this. The only thing I can come up with is he over gorged himself on food and threw up....and aspirated some. I can only hope it wasn't contagious and baby Esme won't get ill as well or I really will be beside myself. She seems a little sluggish today as well...I'm hoping it's my imagination.

It burns me up that I raised 35 healthy, gorgeous babies from Kora and Diablo and here the ONLY one I kept who was perfect in every way....didn't make it. I'm so upset....I so wish I had kept another baby from her. He was so special, the sweetest baby from the minute he hatched, and so beautiful. These are my most recent and last pictures of him :'(

Thanks Katrina...I appreciate the hugs :( I can't stand to sit in my room staring at an empty cage now. And of course I'm worrying to death that Esme is going to catch whatever he had. Luckily Kora is at my mom's house for the winter so she's not exposed to them. I just wish I knew WHY. :(

I am SO SO sorry for the loss of your baby. Your write up nearly made me cry, I can FEEL your heartache. Oh, and it kills. If you ever want to talk with me, my email is [email protected]. I recently lost my 15 year old parrot, so I know what loss is like. Animals ARE people, I don't care what anyone says. You lost a family member, and I am deeply apologetic for your loss, and your beardie is in a good good place now.

Thank you, that's so sweet of you. It'a just especially is hard because he was healthy and happy and everything was just fine. He was 15" and growing great. I do feel better that I at least brought him to work with me, and we at least tried our best to do what we could. It sucked spending most of the morning worrying about my boy while I had to work as well.

I think it's best for you to not dawn on the fact that he was healthy just yesterday. I'm sure you know animals love to try and hide their problems/sicknesses because the weak are always picked on in the wild. Maybe i'm wrong, I don't know. I just want you to grieve healthily, rather then wondering what killed him. You are obviously a great owner, you can tell even from the pictures and the vibrancy of his colors. Kisses and Hugs,

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost one of my dragons suddenly last summer. It was a major shock.

I'm sorry Cyrus died. I know how hard it is to loose a young one. When we lost Redrock, she was just over 2 years old but it was still hard because she seemed so healthy but she lost her grip turning around on my shoulder and must have injured her head when she fell. I still feel bad that I could have caused her death. She was such a wonderful loving beardie that all we have of her are many pictures and memories. The memories are better than nothing, I guess.

Thanks everyone. I'm just so torn up over this because all the work it took to raise 2 clutches of babies...and the only one I kept didn't make it. It sucks. I had big plans for him to be bred and everything...he was gorgeous and SWEET as can be. He was like a personality clone of Kora. I'm just happy he's not suffering now. :( His empty viv still has his salad in it and everything...sigh

Sorry for your loss. I lost my baby Krayt almost a month ago...its was hard to see him go especially before he died he look like he was crying oh man I lost it, I know my other beardie will never make up Krayt but I am just glad I bought another one. Seeing Toruk will never make up me missing Krayt but I know that he is in a better place since he was sick when I get him.

Again sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry to hear about Cyrus' passing. Your post made me cry. I know the mystery and suddenness will weigh on you. He was a beautiful little guy though and was obviously very much loved. *hugs* to you!!!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
