I am posting here about our loss. Today we buried our Bearded Dragon. We got him 20 Aug 2017 and he was about 8 weeks old at that time. Today, 1 Oct 2017, he has passed. (I say he, but he was not even old enough to know if he was a he or she).

I am posting here because I am looking for answers but also want to share what happened as it was so quick. He died about 30 minutes from me first spotting something was wrong. It was not even enough time to get to the emergency Vet. I feel posting this might make others aware that this can happen. I am posting in Health as, this lead to my loved Bernie dying.

We noted over the last 24 hours, his reluctance to eat. He ate but did not seem keen on it.
He seemed fairly active and mobile. This morning, I noted he was staring am me. Not really keen to move. He was holding his head up and looking about, but not really moving about.

I started to pay attention. All looked ok, but something felt wrong.
I decided to take a look. I opened the door and put my hand in and he opened his mouth wider than I have ever seen before. Then his arms were flailing everywhere and his back bent like a horse shoe. He was rock solid in this contorted horse shoe shape. I suspect a seizure ?

I immediately took him out for inspection. After 5 minutes or so, he loosed up and cuddled into the warmth of my hand. I then noted one eye was open, one closed. Then after a while it seemed he could not hold his head up. Shortly after, his back legs and tail had tremors. Then he seemed to stop breathing. After a minute or so I could see noticeable breaths again. then he stopped after a while again. then he opened his mouth extra wide again and then collapsed.

I rushed him to the emergency vet. She felt a very shallow heart beat but no breathing. Then he died. It seemed to be all over before it began. From looking at me to dead.

Being this young, I can't think the stokes would be a calcium issue, wouldn't that take time to develop ?

As we have a second Lawson, I want to be sure that there is nothing going wrong here.
The vet was not an exotic specialist so the best they could do is confirm death and confirm that there was nothing in his throat or airway. He had not choked. I have returned home, completely cleaned out the vivarium. Just in case.

I have sprayed herp antibacterial spray and cleaned everything.

The Vivarium is 24c in the coldest spots and 40c in the hottest. the water changed daily.
Current diet is small crickets and every few feeds in calcium dust. We have a UVA/B lamp on about 10 hours, heat lamp on during the day and ceramic at night.

We had recently tried introducing cauliflower and Bok Choy. The Lawson that died, would not touch it. The other one greedily ate it all up.

Floor substrate is fake grass. They have two hides and a large rock to climb on (They are purpose made and have been did infected every 7 days).

there is a fake climbing vine (disinfected) and other bits and pieces.

We clean the excrement when we see it.

There are no things super high to fall from. They also have a hammock in one corner.
They both started to shed skin about 2 weeks ago so we have been giving them warm baths (paddles) to help with that.

We took them both out for a handle, 30 mins a day. they usually scamper about.
We try not to have anything on the carpet that they should not eat.

I am sure we are not doing anything wrong.

I did note that the surviving one had been picking on the one that died, a little recently. running up and trying to bite it. Also constantly trying to get on top of it. they were both about the same age and from the same genetic pool.

I have not seen him have any seizure up until today. It seems to me that this was a major one.
Sadly, it was my little girls birthday present and now she is heart broken.

Hi there, I'm so sorry to hear this. :( That would have been some type of seizure, possibly from low blood calcium but I don't think it would kill a beardie so quickly. I dont know if Rankin's get the dreaded atadenovirus like the larger pogona vitticeps [ central b.d.'s ] but that's one possibility. Or maybe Bernie ate something that was too big to pass....be careful of hard veggies, anything hard should be grated for small dragons.

Can you post a pic of the other baby as well as the set up ? I know that Rankin's can be kept in groups unlike beardies . Here's how to post pics :

So sorry you lost your baby. Was probably already sick when you bought it.

I think a necropsy is order especially if he/she was sharing a viv with another hatchling. if it was something nasty and infectious you need to know , as the chances are the second hatching is infected now too.

I'd invest in some F10sc and dilute it 1:125 and give everything in the viv and the viv itself a thorough sterilization to ensure no "germs" are left alive .

I Googled it and Rankin's are susceptible to ADV according to this.

It may be what caused Bernie's death. Again, I'm so sorry that you lost your baby and hopefully the other one doesn't have it [ it is very contagious ] or does not get sick. Some dragons live with it and don't get sick like others do.

I'm so sorry, but it sounds very much like Adenovirus. The arching his back like a horseshoe and the tremors are classic Adenovirus signs, if you google Adenovirus and read the signs and symptoms, I think you'll find it's probably what caused it. I've heard several people mention the arching of their backs and then into a seizure with tremors, it's actually listed as a sign of it on most things I've read.

Unfortunately it's extremely contagious, and it sounds like they were housed together and came from the same store or breeder, so chances are that your other one has it as well, though there is always a chance he doesn't... Tracie, who is a moderator here does testing for it cheaply, I think she can send you a sample kit and you just mail it back to her. I'd suggest doing this, it doesn't cost much and that way you'll know for sure. It's becoming very, very common in all beardies in the US, and it doesn't matter where you buy them from, most breeders don't test. But I'd be informing the place you got them from because he certainly had it before coming to you, which probably means all the babies they had at that point have it, and unless they disinfect everything often they probably still have an issue...

Please be sure to disinfect everything inside and out of that enclosure in F10 disinfectant and very hot water, or bleach and very hot water, even the light fixtures.

Thanks everyone. It is starting to sound like adv. unfortunetly we can't test as the family was too upset and we had to have a burial for their sanity.

We did note that this dragon would only eat crickets and no greens and whilst the same age as the other, was smaller.

The lights are managed by thermostats but we check the temp with a contactless hand held thermometer with +|- 1c accuracy. The thermostats record in the extreme edges of the vivarium. The hide in the photo is normally 26c and the rock at very top above 40c and first ledge about 34c

The bearded dragon in the photo is the survivor (buddy)

Here are some photos as requested.

Bernie will not be forgotten but I hope buddy does not suffer the same fate. It was awful and Bernie seemed to be in a lot of pain. I don't wish this expeariance on anyone. Dragon or human. The photo of Bernie was his last and at this point, was still alive. You can sense his pain.

Again I'm very sorry, but I meant you need to have your other dragon tested to know whether or not he has it as well, because unfortunately if it was Adenovirus that killed one, the other one also probably has it, and while there is no cure, there are plenty of things that can help your other one if he has it. I would contact Tracie and get a testing kit.

Thanks, yes we are having the other one tested. We have to wait as it has been a holiday weekend here.
Hopefully seeing a vet tomorrow.

The reply about the other tests were for a necropsy.

That would have solved some riddles :(

Aw, poor little sweetie....so sad esp. when it's a baby that never got to have a life. :( My sympathy to your whole family. :(

Just wanted to point out that your uvb is too far away right now from what I can see. What exact type of bulb do you have ?

Hello,

Yes, I was concerned about the UV globe. I know it is UVA and UVB. I will see if I can find the packet. The vivarium came with built in holes for the globes and has a hard plastic support ridge down the middle making it hard to move the globes about. I might have to consider a long globe hung inside somehow.

I managed to fit the heat globe to the other fixture and used a hold cutter to make another (third) hole for a ceramic heater but it was extremely hard to do :(

In everyone's experience, if UV (and hence Calcium) was an issue, how long before you spot problems with the BD ?

Unfortunately that bulb is not good at all. Too bad they sell such ones. Look for an Arcadia D3 12% long tube bulb and then suspend it down in the tank.

Hello,

Hmm, not good news. As I can't afford a solarmeter 6.5 I am reliant on recommendations :(
I am hunting about for Arcadia D3 long tube bulbs and don't see them readily available in Australia. I will keep looking.

Is the Reptisun 10.0 t5 available ? And if you're in Australia can you make an outdoor safe enclosure ? A screened in patio ? That way he'd get plenty of uvb + it won't matter it the indoor uvb is weak.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
