We saw Rin at the local reptile pet shop and my 9 year old daughter fell in love with him instantly. He was just as curious about us as we were about him. This is the first picture we have of him....He was with his brother in a shared viv, and while his brother dashed away from us, Rin wanted to be held and stayed close.
On March 2, we adopted Rin into our family. We think he was around 3 months old when we we got him, although we are not exactly sure of his age, because they didn't have his hatch date.

Our first picture of him. Rin is on our right side in this photo.

I've found that his body language is fairly predictable. I do watch him like a toddler, but when I see his brain working I know his escape plan and the route.
First, he darts his eyes and head from side to side. Then he gets this look on his face like, "I can do this!" Then, he starts to walk off, followed by a small jolt, then the rotating of the front arms and THAT is when he bolts. Depending on which direction he's going, I will catch him prior to the rotating of the front arms, because he can go fairly fast, considering the rest of the time he's a lounge lizard.
He really likes the outdoors. And usually the escape route is toward the house, probably because I won't let him run to the dirt near the fence.
He threw another tantrum tonight though. Hubby brought him inside and I heard him saying, "YOU'RE GONNA FALL!" If he doesn't want to come in yet, when he is in your hand, and you are walking into the house, he jolts forward. Fortunately, I have kept him from falling off my hand every time, and now I put him on my chest upright, and hold his body with my hands, to ensure he doesn't use that tantrum tactic on me any more. But I forgot to tell hubby, so we had a talk tonight, and included our daughter in how to bring him back into the house.
Ive learned so much about him in the past week. He's around 10 months old now, and for the longest time, I just thought I was talking to a lizard, like I was talking to myself. But he hears my voice and knows who I am from it. And he talks to me so much, he just doesn't do it with a voice. And Im finally coming to understand his body language, beyond black beard, head bobbing, arm waving that you always hear about. They really have so much to say. It's kind of like talking in sign language. He just doesn't use vocal cords to talk. But one thing I do know, is one of the things he has communicated to me in all of his body language is that he LOVES the outdoors, from the way he moves around outside, to the tantrum he throws by pushing himself forward when we come in and he is not ready to do that yet.

I totally missed not answering you when you asked if mine like baths. :? Spyro absolutely loves a bath. I bathe him in a bin in the tub and after he poops he jumps in the big tub to splash. I have a hide I put in there and he will jump off it to splash then climb back up! He is a total goofball. Ember is so laid back about everything. He poops after about 5 minutes then he is done. He is finally exploring a little here and there. He won't go far though.

The pictures of Rin are awesome! He sure knows how to get his way. He didn't try to eat the flowers? Rin needs a headband to keep the sweat out of his eyes from those major basketball skills!

Brezzy-That's a great idea about the tub in a tub!
Rin seems to be a bit claustrophobic when it comes to bathtubs. I have NO idea why. If he can be in a large open tub he absolutely loves it, and as the pictures show, he usually goes into his moments of zen.
He never attempts to eat the flowers when she plays with him. She's put them in front of him as well. He did eye a piece of cucumber that I bit off for him while we were sitting outside tonight, and he snatched it up quickly. But maybe that was because I was the one that put it down for him, and he is used to me feeding him. With her, he just patiently lets her play with him while he stands or sits or squats. I think he must know she's young, because he never tries to escape with her. He's fairly laid back for me as well, but he tests his limits a lot more when Im sitting with him.
As for his SKILLZ...well, he needs practice but he's quite the poser!
Looking back at those pictures, he sure does have a lot of muscle in his front arms. One of the pictures, he actually looks like he has a muscle bump on his upper arm. hah.

So, I told my daughter to sit outside with Rin, because he needed sunshine and I was making dinner. My husband was sitting in the patio making sure that she watched him. I had told her that she needs to talk to him more, because he recognizes the voices of people, the more they talk to him.
So, when she was outside with him, she sat with him and started talking to him. Then she told my husband that she would be right back.
She came back outside with one of her chapter books, and read to him. It was so funny, cute, and sweet..and actually quite clever. She got to spend time with Rin, while reading one of her books (my girl LOVES to read books) and at the same time, he got to hear her voice. While he sunbathed, he seemed curious about her movements and that she was talking to him. The photo my husband snapped of her looks so classic though. She even turned periodically to show him some pictures, for the fun of it. And he just sat up, seemingly curious by the way he kept tilting his head from side to side while she read him a couple of chapters.

A girl and her dragon!

I absolutely love that picture! Rin looks like he is listening to her. Your daughter came up with a great idea by reading to him.

My baby loves me!
haha well, I don't know if he loves me, but he certainly tried to grab on for dear life and jumped back to me several times when giving him to someone that could watch him for the night.

We took him in to the local reptile shop to stay the night (so that we don't scare the landlord when he comes out for his annual inspection tomorrow), and not only did Rin try to jump back to me several times, but the guy behind the counter was cfjustin (Apolo's servant/owner, aka Casper).

It's great to know that Rin is in good hands for today and tomorrow....because after all, my baby <heart>s me. :)

There he is haha! I'm glad I got to see Rin in person! I'm loving these pictures, i definitely made sure he was in perfect condition with his enclosure while we watch him. It was pretty awesome seeing someone from the forums! Small world!

You guys did awesome. We've taken him there a couple of times now, and he always gets the best treatment. A bath, feeders, greens, and he gets to hang out in a tank in the back so he doesn't get all stressed.
Hope you like working there, there's only one guy that doesn't seem to fit in very well. He seems to antagonize (including his coworkers), and gives a LOT of misinformation, seemingly because he only hears half of what he is told, and seems to naive to know what he's talking about. Other than that, everyone there is very sharp and and knowledgeable and great with reptiles!
Thanks for taking care of his tail, and Im glad we both had the same thoughts on the local vet, it set my mind at ease that it wasn't just me. But do you have another local vet in mind? I really hate not knowing of one in our area.

That's great to hear. Let me know what I can do further help you next time you come in if you have any questions let me know also! I'll check on the best local vets for reptiles so we can all avoid that terrible vet we went to.

It's been a while since I've posted on this forum. And a lot has happened.
Rin's tail has always had a very tiny nip on the end of it, and it started turning a lighter dark shade from the tip to about 1/4 up, so I took him to the ONLY vet in our town who works on lizards. He assessed Rin by only having him walk on the table, and said he looks healthy, and as long as the tail underside is not dark too, he's good. He never offered a blood test or anything else. I could have turned him down, of course, but he didn't even give me that option.

Since then, the dark part has traveled up his tail to about half the tail. There's a raised ring around it where the dark part stops and the tail is normal, lighter colored. I have thought for a long time that it's blood poisoning from the tip of his tail being bitten as a baby.

I had to research WHERE there is an actual lizard vet in our surrounding area. I finally found an actual vet clinic that specializes in birds and reptiles, about 40 miles away. I made an appointment to take Rin in to that clinic to be two Saturdays ago. And about an hour before we left, I had him outside in the backyard, with the sliding door open. EVERY DAY he sits outside to get sunshine, and someone either sits outside with him or keeps the sliding door open and sits in a chair in the dining room and when he is ready to come in, it's actually adorable....He runs off the lawn, to the patio and then hops onto the threshold for the sliding door and into the house. Well, that day I put him outside, and asked my 9 year old daughter to watch him for 5 minutes while I went upstairs to change, and I came down, and she was watching TV. NO RIN...anywhere! My daughter was devastated and of course blamed herself. All I could think of, was that Rin was taken away by some talons attached to a predator bird. We both had a big cry, and I called the clinic to cancel the visit. Two hours later, my daughter went down stairs and yelled out, "LOOK WHO I FOUND!" He had come into the house originally, while my daughter was watching TV, and he must have climbed under something at the time. There he was, ready to jump into his viv. So, I called the vet clinic back, and rescheduled for last Saturday.

My daughter and I took him in to the vet's on Saturday, and the vet offered a lot of different things to make sure the small bite had made his tail partially die at the tip, and caused the darkness of the bottom half of his tail. He did a blood panel which will be ready sometime tomorrow. He also offered to put him on antibiotics for now, until the white blood cell count comes back, which I agreed to.
The first estimate was for me to give Rin injected antibiotics, and I found out that oral antibiotics are $125 less, so I chose that. I also insisted on getting Bene-bac (spelling?) for him. The vet said that it's controversial but agreed. I have been around the block a few times and KNOW that antibiotics take out the good bacteria. That's a no brainer.

So, now we wait, although he is fairly certain there will be an amputation involved. When I asked him if it would be the small tip at the end, and he said that if it has to happen, it would be to the point where the ridge is on the tail, which is about half way up the tail. The amputation will be another $300 when it's all said and done.

I am soooo upset at that other stupid vet. He hadn't a clue what he was doing. He did not offer up ANY advise nor any alternative such as blood tests, etc. And of course the other vet defended the INACTION of the other vet, probably because he did not want to get involved in a crazy lady suing the other vet over her pet. hah that would not happen, but Im sure he has come across all kinds of crazy when it comes to people and their pets.

The up side is, Rin LOVES the Bene-bac He sees the syringe and he runs for it like it were food. Then opens his mouth and starts to lick before it even touches his lips.

BUT...should I give it to him while he is taking the antibiotics or AFTER the antibiotics are all used??

The vet said to give it to him daily, while I give him antibiotics every other day, but everywhere I read, it says to give it to him AFTER the antibiotics have run it's course.

Thank you so much. I wasn't sure how many people read the journals so I needed to post there to make sure someone who knows something saw it. Im giving him a half of a measurement every day....it has the ruler lines on it, and the vet said to give him 1/2 of that. Is that what you suggest as well?

ETA- I just re-read your other response and it sounds as if the dosage is correct. I will continue it for 2 weeks after the antibiotic is completed, and as someone else suggested, perhaps once every so often anyway.

I was just thinking of you and Rin. I am so sorry about everything that has happened. Thank goodness y'all found him when he was outside. Does the vet think they will have to amputate? It must be so upsetting to get bad advice from a vet. I'll pray it's nothing more than part of his tail needing amputated. It's only cosmetic. Rin will still be able to function as usual. I have a new rescue who is missing a foot and a toe on another foot. It doesn't stop or slow him down at all. Please keep us updated!

I want to see new pics of Rin! I bet he has grown so much!

I have a video of him walking fast toward the sliding door and then hopping into the house over the threshold. He has really gotten the hang of it. So cute...and from the lawn to the patio his feet get hot, so he runs, and then stops when he reaches shaded patio area...and then his beard turns to black, because his feet got hot. And as soon as the blackness goes away, he runs further to the sliding door and lets himself in. Soooo funny. It's like he runs across the hot part and the beard is giving away his thoughts of "Oh ouch damn...ohh that hurt! OUCH!"

(disclaimer, it's never burning hot, just more like, inconveniently hot enough to scurry to the shaded area-and to give a blackbeard)

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
