retained shed turned to tail rot?

My bearded dragon has had some trouble with retained shed in the past, I went away for a night or so, (I had someone looking after him and feeding him) and when i got back the last centimetre of his tail was black, when i gave him his nightly bath the place that was black shed off, he still had feeling in it but it remained really dark coloured, on the top of his tail, the underside looks fine and completely healthy. the point of colour cutoff is also a really obvious line, like its normal coloured and then bam its dark. i can't upload pictures since I'm on mobile right now, but can anyone tell me if it sounds like something i should be concerned about?

he eats really well and other than the discolouration nothing seems to be wrong, he's active not at all lethargic, drinking well and alert.

i figured id give it till tuesday and if it was still dark id take him to the vet since my vet is closed tomorrow and monday for the long weekend. is there anything else i could be doing? is this more of an emergency then I'm treating it as or am i just paranoid?

Hi there, it's impossible to say without a picture. Lots of beardies have part of the tail that is dark. Generally, true tail rot is when the end becomes very thin + brittle and there is a noticeable difference in the tail going from normal looking to suddenly a skinny twig. Another thing to look for when it hasn't reached that stage is a reddish/pink infection right under the scales.

If you could find a way to post a pic that would help. In the mean time, look up " bearded dragon black tail " and you'll see pics of mostly normal tails that are just dark at the end, which is common, as well as some that are actual tail rot.

it does have a slight pinkish colour near the very base of the scales in some places does that mean there still time to do something about it? ill try to post pictures when i get home today.
