Hello everyone! I have been lurking on the forums for over a year planning my future bearded dragon purchase but just now decided to go ahead and introduce myself since I am now officially getting a beardy. I found a add on craiglist for one with a tank and stand included for $150 and thought wow what a good deal. Even though she is 2 years old and I want a baby I decided I am buying her particularly because I feel the need to rescue every abused reptile I find on craigslist lol. She is being sold by the owners girlfriend who says he never feeds or pays attention to her. She is to skinny, and the tank is a cramped 50 gallon. I am picking her up on the 1st.

I will of course do a ton of research before then, but is there anything I should be concentrating on to get her healthy and comfortable? She will be in the 50 gallon for a short while, until I build another terrarium. Off the top of my head I know I need a heat lamp, UVB light, basking log, fresh salad, water dish, misting, attention, and calcium to dust food with. I currently have a stock of superworms and large crickets that my Pacman and Leo eat, so I plan on feeding her those.

I wouldn't bother misting, but have some kind of tub prepared to provide soaks. A regular bath and routine should help a lot. I also suggest a checkup with the vet to help build a plan for brining her back to health. It would be a good idea to bring a fecal sample for testing as well.

Welcome to the site!

You already have some experience with reptiles, and you are doing your research, so I think you are good to go!

Has the previous owner shared any info as to what she likes to eat? That would help if you could find out which veggies she likes beforehand and have them ready. I would also check to see what the tank will come with (if anything) - make sure that it doesn't have a compact bulb for UVB, and look into different substrates to see what will be best for you and her.

(BTW - I am constantly looking at Craig's List, too, and there are so many times that I want to adopt another critter, but I think I am at my limit ... For now!)

Thanks for all the replies! I actually decided on a baby I found for around the same price. If I could I would buy both because I feel so bad for the adult.

I know what you mean about rescuing all those beardies on Craigslist... I'm taking a trip through four states and checked Craigslist to see if there were any I could help. I wish I had more $$..and tanks..and lights..well, you get the picture!

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
