Hello all, I just took in a new beardie a couple of weeks ago. He was turned over to the pet store I work for as the people who had him did not want to take care of him any longer. Unfortunately I was not there when they brought him in so I know very little about his previous life and what little I know is not good. He was skin and bones, lethargic and dehydrated when he came in, no interest in eating at all. All he was fed previously was grapes lettuce and crickets.........I know I know.
I took him home after others at the store said he would die, there was nothing they could do. Thankfully I had just moved my beardies around, my full grown guy into a 90gal tank, my tailless beardie, who we did not think would outgrow a 20L, into a 40 breeder because he has grown so much in the last 8 months!!!!! So luckily I had his 20L still.
Anyway on the new guy, I introduced him to hornworms, and raised his tank temps to proper levels and he did start eating. No flames about the pet store please.....I have no control over it.
He is doing great, eating crickets, hornworms, occasional superworms, peppers, greens, squash and more, eating is not an issue at this point. I do dust with calcium and vitamins regularly, He has a 10.0 a Repti-sun bulb 9 months old, but I have a new one ordered. 2 heat bulbs for basking and to get his temps up at least until his ceramic bulb comes in to help. He is in my temporary/spare 20long tank, with ceramic tile. I test temps with both a digital thermometer and a digital infrared.
The problem.......he walks and stands weird......instead of walking and standing on his feet like i would expect, feet flat on the floor, he walks on the tops of his feet, foot turned under. He turns his foot under, walking almost on his wrist????? all his feet some of the time......it looks painful, is this normal or a bone weakness? He gets around fine, however, climbing, jumping, walking, just I have never seen any beardies do this and thought I would ask.

Hi. Glad you took him in. Sounds like he has metabolic bone disease. Its where he didn't get enough uvb rays and calcium. Its not reversible, but you can prevent it from getting worse. I would use liquid calcium that will get absorbed better then the powder. I would also make sure his basking spot is not hight as his bones are probably weaker and can break easily.

That was what I feared, I can get the liq. calcium for him.......just want him to be as healthy as possible.....just had him out running the living room.......my other 2 don't do much, but he likes to run! not way from us necessarily, just run around the room, I am hoping the exercise will be good for him, I doubt he got much where he was at previously. It is just so strange watching him walk normal, then suddenly run around with 1 or more of his feet turned backwards.
I did not think about the higher basking spot.....here i was trying to add more height/levels so he could get exercise, and enrichment, but I don't want him to fall and get injured.

Yeah id just let him run around the room for some exercise. You can also take him out side for some natural sun and let him exercise very closely supervised of course :D . He sounds like hes full of energy that's good the mbd hasn't slowed him down. Would love to see pictures :D

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
