I've been told two different things and i'm confused, one person told me it should be alright having my uvb light on top of the screen lid with 1mm holes and that if i put it in there it will cause eye damage? someone else told me he will get hardly any UVB with the screen lid in the way, would love some replies, thanks! P.S My UVB light is a Reptile one, 15 Watt T8 10.0 Reptiglo.

Hi there....according to the test done by uv.guide.co.uk fine mesh filters out from 25-35 %. If you don't have a reflector on your fixture you can use aluminum foil to increase the amount of uvb reflected in to the tank. If you used screening that is slightly larger holes you only lose about 15 %.

Since you're using a T8 I recommend mounting it inside the tank unless you have a small (20g or less size) as they aren't very powerful to begin with. If you're using a reflector, the optimal distance for a T8 is about 6-8'' above the basking area. This distance should provide sufficient UVB and not be too intense as to cause eye issues.

20 gallon tank. They are only 12'' tall so if you put any kind of logs/hides in it, that will bring it into the 6-8'' range and there isn't enough room for a more powerful bulb to be safe at that distance.

OK that's a bit bigger. You'd be best off getting a T5 and setting that on top but your T8 will be OK if you mount it inside. It should sit 15-20cm above the basking area for best results.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
