Real rockface background

Anyone have experience with creating a realistic looking rock background?

I've seen it come with premade enclosures from Exo-terra. It's like a shaved styrofoam sheet painted. It looks very realistic but I can't seem to find them premade for generic sized aquariums.

Im currently putting this set up together so my BD can get healthy again. I got Dusty from his previous owner who had him for 15 month with no UV light in a 23" high tank. I went ahead and bought a Reptisun 10.0 but in order to work properly I had to get a shorter tank. This current one is 48"x18"x18". I bought 3 pieces of the background @ 24"x24" (there actually 23"x23" when I measured them) cut them down to size with a utility knife and coated them with a clear non toxic polycrilic to harden them up a little more. Let them set out side for a day or two and your good to go. His former location was calcisand rock images. He seems to love it climbing everywhere. He almost climbed out of the tank so I built a top. Did you actually grout in the tile? Hard to tell from the picture.

no I used a piece of MDF for a base. Had the tiles cut pretty close to size of the base and applied a little amount of clear aquarium adhesive in between just to keep tiles together. Tiles are not glued to the base MDF there just slightly joined together but not enough to be a hassle and seep on top of creases and easy to remove and dissmantle.

I would like to consider this a temp, I would like to build a front open enclosure. Probably not for a few month so this set up i'll just leave simple.
