Question about heat

Your digital is quite new, right? If not, you could try replacing the batteries. How does Rufus act in his tank? Does he bask much? Does he go there on his own or do you have to set him up in the basking spot?

I have a fixture with a tube UVB bulb but the heat bulbs are in domes.

It's a brand new therm. Just got it earlier this week. Roo acts just like normal. He climbs up on his hammock to bask on his own. I haven't noticed any different behavior.

about 7 inches under the basking lights, lol. Its up in a corner under the lights.

Ok, for some reason I thought you were using a log for his basking area, my mistake. Does he stay under the lights for very long at a time? How long have you had both those basking bulbs in the tank? Do you have any idea what the temp is on the cool side?

I got up this morning and reset the thermometer and took away one of the lights. Right now his basking temp is 103.1 and his coolside is around 70.
I don't know what the heck happened but

ETA: When I came home from a meeting today I offered him a few supers - he actually ran to get them. Normally he's not nearly this active. Hopefully these temp corrections are going to lead to a much healthier and happier beardie.

Wow, you had us wracking our brains trying to figure out what was going on. :? :mrgreen: Sounds like the thermometer needed to be reset. The temps with both of those bulbs had to have made the tank WAY too high. Let us know what the temps are later today. If the cool side stays at about 70, you could use the other dome with a small wattage household bulb just over that side. You could start with a 25 watt and see if you can get that temp about 80 because that would be an ideal cool side temp.

I was thinking earlier it could be because of the outside temps. Yesterday it was very very low 40s and today its in the 70s (gotta love NC). My house was super cold yesterday. We'll have to see. I did purchase a 100 watt household bulb today and I'm going to monitor the temps and then make adjustments to the coolside with the 40 watt I have.

The outside temps could have affected the viv temps somewhat but needing 2 - 100 watts in that size tank should have still given you a much higher reading. I think the thermometer needed to be reset, that happens sometimes. Let us know how you make out. Glad to be of help.

Oh good glad you got it under control.I do agree outside temps would affect it but only slightly.Diane is right that much wattage in your size tank it wouldnt matter how cold it was outside theres just no way.I would still get a new thermometer just to be safe though.
