Protazoan that is not coccidia...and my goy on flagyl does't want to eat much.

So my guy Scooby was diagnosed with spirochetes a couple of months ago at a well lizard visit. No symptoms, voracious appetite, but we gave the treatment.

For the past three weeks, he has stopped eating his morning greens that he has eaten every morning since he was 8 weeks old, and moving a bit less. No swollen joints or any other worrisome symptom.

I dropped off a stool sample to the reptile vet and found out he has a protazoan organism (not coccidia) and was sent home with Flagyl (the same drug we were given for the other infection).

We are about to give his second dose, and his normal, voracious appetite for dubias is about half what he usually eats

He is a big 8 month old, so prior to this we were cutting down on his bugs.

He really has me worried, he is a food glutten. I hope as the next couple of days pass, his appetite will improve. He has some fat stores: 8 months old, 20.5 inches and 560 grams.

Thoughts on giving probiotic powder in the morning, and the flagyl in the evening? I am so worried.

Hi there,

It's curious that there were no Protazoa found prior to you using Flagyl and now after using Flagyl (a medication that essentially is the treatment for Protazoa) that you are now seeing Protazoa.

Did the vet give you the count on the slide?

I think I mentioned it in your other thread, but I recommend only treating for parasites when necessary, or symptomatic. I'd be weary of treating again, but sounds like you've already started.

Your probiotic regimen will be fine.

Don't get to worked up overcthe loose of appetite, meds really screw with it. (Every single beardie I've given meds to lost their appetite) it took Snickers from November to late March early April to start eating good again and she still doesn't eat like she did before meds. It took Zen about 3 months before he started eating good again.

So with the so called spirochete infection , he had zero symptoms.

He is now symptomatic: moving and eating less, and I was worried enough to make a vet appointment (since cancelled after the positive stool sample). He has not lost any weight and is still 561 grams, and grew another 1/2 inch to 20.5 inches. He is about to turn 8 months, so he has some fat to spare.

I never got the count on the slide, and I had to be a bit pushy with the poor vet tech to find out if said protazoa infection was coccidia (not).

He truly is acting different.

Thank you for this...makes me less worried.

a poem by AHBD (THANK YOU SO MUCH! I LOVE IT!)

Sir Henry the dragon
Looking for his dragon girl
Ventures out in to the wide world
His hopes are up but as you can see
There is no dragon girl for Sir Henry
A light bulb goes off and he takes mom aside
Could you perchance get me a mail order bride ?
