i'm looking for some info/suggestions while i wait until my vet visit next week. first about me - i've had bearded dragons for over 10 years, ranging in ages from baby to elderly adult, from normals to fancy morphs. i'd like to think i have a lot of experience, i research anything i don't know about, & i have an awesome reptile vet.
i have a male bearded dragon by name of Set, about 4 years old, a big healthy eater & pooper. he loves to show off to the female he can see, & to display to the male he can see. he would run (or maybe i should call it fly!) all around his cage, including "surfing" sideways on the fake rock wall, literally all day long. lots of energy & attitude with my Set! due to illness with the female, i had to put her into a small isolation tank farther away, that he can't really see. she has since recovered & will be moved back into her large cage after a complete disinfection/cleansing protocol. his activities slowed down some, since he didn't have a female to show off for, & that's when i noticed something different about him.
he seemed to be walking oddly, but it was hard to tell exactly what was going on. i took him out & let him walk around the room for a while. i should say that he has never really enjoy being held, so to avoid stress i don't take him out very often. i'd like to, but it's more important to me that he be happy. well, as he was exploring the room, it was clearly obvious that something was wrong with how his legs move when he walks. he also didn't walk much before sitting down on the ground to rest. my first thought was that maybe he injured himself during his intense physical exertions; i've seen him fall off the wall before, but he always jumped right back up to run around more. other than the problems he seemed to have in controlling his limbs, he appeared fine. he has feeling in all legs/feet, & he really didn't like me inspecting them! i felt his belly for a possible large poop, but all felt normal. he has been pooping regularly & it looks like normal poop, so i doubt parasites are the problem.
his home is a 48x22x22 tank, with a 48" reptisun 10.0 bulb (about 6 months old), fake rock background, wood branches for climbing, a magnetic ledge for perching, a fake cave to hide in (but he rarely does), assorted fake plants, a large sized heat rock (no heat burns on scales, i always check to be sure not too hot), food & water dishes, a slate tile under the overhead 75wt basking bulb on the hot side, & a 50wt basking bulb on the cool side. has a mix of CareFresh & Kaytee Clean/Cozy paper bedding (he loves to burrow into it) that is spot cleaned daily, & changed out every few months. hot side temps are 95-100 degrees, cool side temps are 70-80 degrees, temps from probes as well as an infra-red gauge from the pet store.
he loves to eat Dragon Bites (by Nature Zone) which is a moist diet for beardies. he will also eat a little of the dry pelleted bearded dragon diet (by Exo Terra). he is picky about eating his veggies, which are collard greens & squash, with occasional berries, carrot shreds, red bell pepper, or sweet potato/yams as treat/additions. he gets super worms, repti-worms, or dubia roaches about 3 times a week. his food gets dusted with Repti-Cal calcium+D3 powder every other day, & dusted with Repti-Cal vitamin powder twice a week. fresh water daily, but he usually runs over the dish enough to fill it with bedding material & makes a huge mess. my 3 other bearded dragons get exactly the same foods, but none of them have any problems walking.
since i couldn't find anything wrong with him, i started wondering if maybe he needed more supplements/vitamins due to his recent/long-term high activity. i purchased some liquid calcium glubionate, liquid B complex vitamins, & some acidophiliz+ from beautifuldragons.com, along with some syringes (no needles). i've been giving him about 1/2 cc each of the calcium & vit B every two or three days, lucky for me he attacks the syringe every time, so he's easy to dose! he got about 1/2 cc of the acidophiliz+ a week ago, so i'll continue to give that once each week. it's been 2 weeks since i started giving him the supplements, & i've noticed that he seems to be a little stronger & have a slight increase in leg control. bcz of this, i'm thinking that he just needs additional supplementation. but i'm wondering why/how this problem started? is it due to the extremely high activity level he had, or could it be due to genetic issues? all i know about his genes is that i was told he's an italian red & het for leatherback.
does anyone have experience with this situation, or any suggestions for me? as previously stated, a vet trip is coming up soon, so i'm hoping something can be found to explain why this happened, & a treatment plan made. he seems happy & healthy regardless of his leg problems, he eats very well, drinks fine, & has no unusual behaviors. thanks for anything submitted, i appreciate the help & information!
