possible kidney damage !!

The vet gave Skitz (9 months old) Bytril to treat pneumonia. She weighs about 50g and got a dose of 0.01/2ml a day. The vet failed to mention the need for a probiotic. Skitz got better till about 3/4 days after starting the Bytril. The vet told me to finish the entire 10day course. On day 8 I got advised on this forum about probiotics. So that is about 9 days on Bytril with no probiotics . As soon as missT told me about the need for a probiotic I got some soy yogurt for skitz. She is extremely lathargic, with no appetite whatsoever. So far I've given her babyfood and she ate one cricket on her own and I hand fed her some, just so she gets calcium. Her eyes are swollen and very gooey. Every morning her eye lids are stuck together. That's how bad it is. The earliest apointment I could get is tomorow. She shows the major signs of kidney damage... What are her chances? How can I treat her in the meanwhile?

im treating my beardie for parasites and im not using any probiotics. Shes still eating fine(Its a he not a she anymore) and shes still her hungrey greeding self. how can this affect the kidney? wondering does all meds for beardies need a back up probiotic? no matter what knid of meds?

I don't think a lack of probiotics will affect the kidneys. The meds destroy good bacteria in the tummy making them feel ill so probiotics help replace those- it will take some time if they weren't getting the probiotic during the medication.

Beardieskitz, what type of uv light are you using?
Can u post a picture of her eyes?

It could be an issue with the uv light or possibly another symptom related to the pneumonia.

The coil, but I've got a reptisun 10.0 on order. Skitz is getting xrays and blood taken tomorrow.. we'll see how it goes

Note: bytril was not administered oraly. It was with a needle in the muscle strip next to the spine..

Switch the coil off. It sounds like she may have pkc (a form
of conjunctivitis caused by bad uv lighting). It could take over a week for her eyes to heal but switching off that light will help. She will be better off with no light for a few days.

Hi everyone, thank you for your advice.
I took skitz to a vet 4 hrs away from home. The vet said Bytril is a very gentle drug. I told her I only did 9 injections.. the last one seemed too much.. and I'm a Nazi when it comes to finishing a course if antibiotics. And the vet was like What?? You INJECTED her? I wouldn't even do that myself... It's administered orally.. it seemed to have no detrimental effects on her muscles. But.... Wait for it... She's anemic. ?? Her white bloodcell count to fluid is 10%... As opposed to the 40% norm. She also said its because she's been so sick for a while. The vet suspects kidney damage but won't make assumptions until we have the results back from blood tests. She is being monitored this week. The vet is checking every possible thing that could make skitz this sick.. skitzy is in good hands. It's worth mentioning that the eye swelling started going down after they gave her anti inflammatory juice. She also has liquid everywhere builtup, on the side of her head, her abdomen, behind her eyes ect. She is eating crikets though. So its looking up

i would also turn off the coil lamp they have been known to cause eye problems. Definitely better off without it a few days until your repti SUN tube comes in

There is no issue with injecting. And baytril is not gentle on reptiles. In fact, injecting it is probably less harsh than oral administration.

In the end it all worked out well for skitz. She is healthy, active and her ferocious appetite is back! I figured I might still post some pictures to help other people in the same situation.

This is skitz when she was sick, very puffy, anemic and suffering from calcium deficiency.

Hi Tracie, I called the vet and she will mail the results to me. Things she mentioned was that her white blood cell count was a mere 10% instead of 40%. I feed skitz crickets with calcium everyday. This morning I gave her some pumpkin. She dug right in. Ate lots of it. And then the eyes puffed up again and the whites in her eyes became red! I made sure she had lots of water and by 15:00 it was down again. Could she possibly allergic to pumpkin?
