Possible brumation - need advice

Hi everyone

So I'm looking for a bit of advice and reassurance! I have had little Snoot for almost a year now and have spent most of that year a nervous wreck over one thing or another with the little guy although he's always been absolutely fine. He's about a year and a half old.

So the last few weeks he's been eating a lot less just the odd locust and no salad which yeah I get it's winter he's slowing down but he stopped pooping, He's never been a very good viv pooper always preferred a bath but I was having to rub his belly continuously to hit the payload even once a week. His urates have been chalky but he gets water every day even though he mostly refuses to drink any and I mist his salads every day. So knowing that he wasn't pooping and still had food in his gut I kept sticking him on his basking log and giving him exercise and baths to empty his belly.

Moving on to last night he had a bath and did the toilet, refused any food and wandered off to the cold end of his viv wiggled his butt and closed his eyes. Stuck his lights on this morning as normal and I've come home tonight and he was still fast asleep but half opened an eye when I slid the door of the viv open to get a better look at him.

A bit more background: he has never been very good at getting himself out of bed. When he was little and fell asleep in the cool end he would still be there at lunch time the next day awake but not making any move to bask even though his lights had been on for several hours and I would then plonk him on his basking log and he would be quite happy. However in recent months he has taken to sleeping right next to his log so no movement required in the morning.

So I really don't know what he's up to! I never worked out why he wouldn't move to the heat in the mornings but he's been actively seeking out a corner to nap in the last few weeks and I don't know whether he's trying to brumate in some form or what the hell is going on. I also don't know if that could be related to the bout of constipation he's been having and the urates are hard because he's been holding on or if his metabolism has just slowed right down?

I should mention he's in a 4ft with 100w bulb on a dimmer with basking temp of 40 Celsius and has an arcadia 14% uvb and has lino and a sand mat for substrate. He gets bugs about 5 times a week been trying to wean him onto a more adult diet without a lot of success and will only eat rocket as far as vegetables go.

Sounds like he's probably trying to settle in for brumation.

It's best for his health if you try to facilitate this, rather than try to keep him awake. In my experience offering bugs can be disruptive to the brumation cycle, which leads to a longer brumation period. Instead, just offer salads. If he's hungry, he'll eat, but if he's not, he'll keep sleeping. As for the poo question, yes, bearded dragons' metabolisms slow down during brumation to the point where they don't digest their food well — another reason why it's best not to force the food issue. My beardie's been in brumation for a month now and she hasn't eaten anything except for when my husband offered her a few roaches (and even then she was too sleepy to get out of her hide).

As he sleeps, weigh him weekly with a kitchen scale to make sure he's not losing weight, which can mean there's a problem and you need to take him to the vet.

After he wakes up is the perfect time to switch to a new feeding regime. If he's about 18 months old, at that point you can offer bugs about 2x/week for the first month, and then reduce insect feedings to just 1x/week for the rest of his life. Salads can be offered every other day. He might resist at first (bugs are like cheeseburgers for bearded dragons) and refuse to eat for a week or so, but once he gets hungry enough he'll make the switch.

Thank you so much for your reply! Makes me a feel a lot better. I just tried to keep him up until I knew his gut was empty to make sure he didn't end up poorly and I think that's why last night he finally went for it good and proper.

I guess I'll just leave him to it then he looks perfectly content and his colours are excellent so I suppose nature just needs to take its course!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!

Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
