Porcelain tile substrate

I have picked up porcelain tile for the substrate of my tank. I'm currently sanding a few of the tiles down to fit snug, and was wondering what everyones opinion was on sealing the tiles in place and all the way around with almond silicone or something similar. I've read a few things that say not to seal the tiles in place because it being able to remove them makes it easier to clean. Wouldn't it be easier to clean if it was sealed together properly, and not having to remove the tiles?

Removing one tile, spraying it off with a hose outside, and drying it before putting it back is far easier.

Agreed. I just cleaned my tanks and I'm so glad I never got around to permanently keeping them in tank. They make the tanks soooo heavy if you ever try to move them.

Hi IonBob00! I didn't want create a new topic about porcelain tiles, so wanted to ask you : how is this type of substrate working for you? Is it too slippery for your beardie? My local home depot has 6*6 porcelain tiles, but they are rather smooth, so I am afraid he will slide. And the slate tiles the store has are 12*12 and are very difficult to cut :( So I have very little choice here..

While the beardie does occasionally "burn out" on the tile, I think it works great as a substrate! As far as tile sizing, home depot or lowes should be able to cut the tiles for you while your there, otherwise I would have run into the same issue! So in my opinion I would look for the most visually pleasing NON GLAZED tile, and have the store cut to size. Sanding tiles is just about impossible, by the way ;)

Thanks for your quick reply! Home Depot actually told me they don't offer cutting services anymore :( (I live in Canada). I bought some 12*12 slate tiles from them and gave to my stepdad to cut and when he opened the box they were all broken!! Home Depot you suck!! So I am going to return those and go to Lowe's - it looks like they have more tile variety and do have a cutting service (I hope). Uhh this is a bit frustrating but in the end I am sure its worth it! Thanks again.

I bought some slate tile on Saturday... Like you, all the tiles in the box were broken.
But not in a way I couldn't get them to fit in the tank.

We cut one to size to finish the flooring portion up... And it looks great.
I didn't want ceramic or porcelain as its quite slippery

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
