Okay, so I followed the little guide here about Phoenix Worms to get them nice, fat, and juicy. That being said, I have a few warnings for those planning on keeping them because I was completely caught off guard. (Do note the guide is great and 100% accurate as far as growing them goes!)
First and foremost, find a way to tape up your critter keeper or better yet.. DON'T keep them in a critter keeper until they're big and juicy. Phoenix worms CAN and DO fit through the critter keeper lid slots. I have picked up 15 off my floor in the past 30 minutes, and I'm sure I'll find more. It's not fun at all and it is suuuper gross. They climb up the walls easily, even if the walls are clean and there's no liquid on them
Secondly, they stink. Well, not the worms, but the food that you feed them. Baby food and organic bread aren't made to last, and personally though the guide to keeping them says to change it every 48 hours, I change it at least once a day.
Third, they grow FAST on this diet. Super fast! I have some ready to pupate and have only had them for 4 days. Unless your dragon is eating a large number of them a day, I'd suggest forgoing the heating pad and letting them grow at a slower pace. You can also cool them in your refrigerator after they're full grown to slow down the pupating process.
And lastly... they don't really float. At least, not all of them do. My biggest suggestion is to get a large strainer with very small holes and fill the container with water, then pour the water/worm/bread/baby food mixture into the strainer, spray them with water until they're cleaned off, and put them into a container with the food.
Well this is just some stuff I have learned in the last 4 days. The worms are great, my Amelia goes after them super happily which is great since she eats 10+ of these at a time and would fight us to eat more than 2 crickets. I WOULD suggest you get Phoenix Worms if you'd like, I just wanted to give some more updated information to keep you from having a Phoenix Worm disaster like me!
