Well i thought id share my story. for christmas i was given a gift card from my family members.
it was to one of my favorite stores :) petsmart. but as i entered i went past the reptiles. in a cage no bigger than 5 gallons were 5 baby bearded dragons. and obviously dead runt. a more large dominant one with a tail nip and missing toes. and 3 very lethargic ones. i was so hurt seeing these little ones in such distress. i spoke to the "reptile manager" who didnt know a thing about the beardies. i asked what they were being fed and she said mainly mealworms once every other day, and crickets as a treat. she said they were fed romaine lettuce. which is a big no no. and calcium was sprinkled onto the meal worms. i was baffled by how misinformed they were. that i asked to hold one of the babies. she said they havent been eating due to stress from being shipped. i told her about the dead runt and she proceeded to pull it out. and throw it into the trash can. i was so disgusted :puke: . i picked up a beautiful red baby with obvious hips protruding from lack of food. i was so saddened :( . i convinced the manager to let me buy the little one for 29.99 from a price of 59.99 and i was assured that i can have a guarantee, luckily i had 10 dollars left on my giftcard after the purchase. and bought some crickets. and some supplies for my little guy. i will post pics soon. i just need to get ahold of my camera.

i spoke to her about the care for these guys and that she should give crickets as a staple and mealworms never. not until adults. i felt bad because of the poor husbandry and lack of attention to these guys. i spoke to the uppers and they told me they cant upgrade. it would cost to much. and that the babies get sold within a few days. i told them they werent going to sell them at that price. and that no one in their right mind would buy a sick animal. but luckily i had the heart to buy one. i feel bad. and was hoping to get more. but i dont have the time and space for more than two dragons. its hard enough that i bought one. and a sick one. so im nursing him back to health. do you have any ideas on how to fatten up a 5 inch baby? ive been feeding pinhead crickets. and small bearded dragon bites. and he actually eats those. he looks fat. but hasnt gained any weight. his hips are still there. and have been slightly less noticable. but still a little underweight. the guy eats about 30 small pinheads. and a few bearded dragon bites. hes under a zoomed 10.0 uvb bulb. and is in a 20 gallon long. with a DIY basking shelf covered in astroturf. hes not on sand. and doesnt touch his veggies. but that should be understanded. sorry for the long rant. im just irritated at the fact that they dont care for their animals. and that they are so ignorant. but any advice will be much appreciated. ill post pics in a few.

It is good you saved him. Chain petstores are known for not having proper care of their animals.
Are you giving calcium and vitamins to your baby? You need to be giving him calcium 5 days a week 1 feeding a day and vitamins 2 days a week 1 feeding a day.
Try getting some stage 1 turkey or chicken baby food and mixing his calcium and vitamins in it to feed him. Put a drop on his nose and let him lick it off. just keep feeding him like that for a few days and let him get his weight up like that. Both of your dragons need calcium and vitamins. It is good he is eating the pinheads. I wouldn't worry so much about the salad right now just keep offering though.
Also have you been giving him baths? try frequent baths for about 15 minutes at a time. he is more than likely very dehydrated.

Ok. I've been giving him calcium everyday. But no vitamins I'll get some today. Should I syringe feed him? Or just drop it on his nose? I can get turkey and chicken baby food. Do i need to supplement the baby food with calcium ? Thanks for the advice.

You can try just putting it on his nose he should just lick it off. Since he is eating the crix maybe you won't need the syringe. If you are dusting the crix then you won't need to mix the calcium in the baby food. I usually find it easier if I am having to feed the baby food to take a little out and mix it with the calcium or vitamins and feed it. That way I can measure how much he is getting. Good luck with the baby and please post pix. We love pix here.
Are you doing baths with the little one?

thats odd, the petsmarts near me arent that awful. blaze what state are you in? and dont believe it when they cant upgrade, they can feed just crickets. thats what the ones near me do, i saw a mealie in once and demanded it was to be removed. The gallon size i know they cant change that because unfortunately the itty bittys dont stay long, but 5 is a lot for one cage. I'd go back and give them tips again, if people mention it enough they may do something. from what i've seen some people they hire arent experienced in reptiles but some are willing to learn and do right by the animals.

Ok. Well he's dong good with bathes. I've been putting in lukewarm water in a Tupperware bowl. And he dipped his head into drink. He's doing great. And I'll post some pics tonight. His poop is looking good and his urates are good too. And I live in Florida. I'll have to go back and give tips if I don't see a change. This is the first petsmart and chain store I've come across that takes such horrible care of their pets. They even recommended sand for babies. I'm just in awe at how bad their care is. I'll be posting some pics later on tonight. It'll be of him and his setup. So any advice for his tank is appreciated. Thanks in advance

On another note. s/he does this thing where the tips of her back foots toe twitches.
i heard it was due to lack of calcium, so ive been supplementing it, and taking it outside for some sun too.
aside from his uvb bulb too. any advice? its not much. but i can still notice when it happens. but it doesnt happen to frequently either.
hope you like the pictures. i cant wait to fatten him up, and watch him grow up :)

I just have a couple of small suggestions. s/he is really tiny and those food and water bowls seem really big in there. Maybe at least for now I would go with something smaller. I have used and still use just the lid off of a butter tub. That way it is shallow enough that the little baby can get to the food that is in it.
Also what length is your UVB light? it doesn't look (at least in that pic) like it covers the whole viv? Does it cover the whole length of the viv?
I like your set up. It looks nice. I am sure as s/he grows it will be really happy.

We have had 2 that were tiny like that. Keep up the good work. Keep up the baths, sun, calcium and babyfood.

if you are going to have a smaller size uvb bulb make sure it's in the basking area. That's where he/she will spend most of it's time anyways. I would mount the uvb bulb fixture in the inside of the tank 6 to 8 " from the basking spot. if 6 to 8 inches isn't doable 10 to 12 is sufficient.

Ok. ill change out the water bowl. and food dish.
i just used them because that was all i had. but ill use a butter dish.
and ill move the uvb closer to the basking part. it only covers About half the viv. but ill lay it on his basking side.
and do you guys think itll be easy to fatten him up? his hips are whats worrying me. thanks for the advice :)

I hope you did not misunderstand I meant the LID from the buttertub so that it is really shallow.
as for fattening him up it is gonna take some time. He is very tiny and weak. It is gonna be a very slow process. You said he is eating on his own some right? if so then you can try ordering some soft bodied worms for him. something like waxworms or butterworms. They will help to fatten him up. waxies are more fatty but the butters are at least a little more nutritious. even order some phoenix worms. They are full of calcium for him plus they are small and he could munch on them through the day. You can just leave some of them in his bowl.
Is his energy picking up some with the extra protien from the babyfood and the baths?

I understood.
and he seems pretty active now. i gave him a warm bath, and he poo'd.
this time he actually swam a bit. as for feeding, hes getting a better appetite. and is eating over 30 pinheads a day.
he nibbled on some salad last night. so at least hes interested in them. as for fattening him up, my bait store sells waxworms.
and crickets. so ill get some waxworms from there.
i just hope that there small enough. thanks for the advice :) i appreciate it, and so does the little guy :D

with soft waxys i think its not as bad as feeding a large cricket to a baby since their so soft and squishy. but i'd wait for someone else's opinion on that. i know if the worm was bigger or as big as your babys head i wouldn't offer the worm, though cutting it in half may work (its gross but they still wiggle)

make sure that your calcium has plenty of d3 i had the foot twitch with one of my babies i just got but the vet told me it was bc ove a calcium and d3 deficiency not all calcium supplements provide d3. double check.
Ps not all petsmarts are like that i have found my petsmart to be excelent. if their beardies come in too small they refuse a sale and hold them in the back untill they fatten up and grow. i work with the one in sc very closely and if i was to buy an animal and it got sick they rush them to the best vet in the area.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
