I came across two skinny mini Beardies with a messy tank and a bowl of mealworms(dead?) and big crickets hanging around inside. These Beardies were most definitely hatchlings. One was stealing the spotlight and acting very active so I held him, the other was drooping his head over his bowl looking barely alive. A week or two later I came back and saw that there was only one. It was the droopy one! Still looking very sickly and half-dead. I asked the guy if the other one was adopted out (feeling relief) and he responded saying "Oh no, this is the little guy you held. I actually have the other one in the back because its not eating or
drinking and barely moving.' The droopy little guy I was looking at was the one that was most active previously! I told the guy how disappointed I was. I told him everything they were doing wrong. He said 'I know. I have a few at home, we are required to provide this for them. I really feel so bad for the little guys. HE noticed my sad reaction and went onto say " We have to have all our reptile tanks filled, or our store location will be docked points. Don't tell anyone but it's really sad. We pack as many in there in these tiny boxes. I really wish we could separate them or get bigger boxes with proper setup. But honestly, it's just about money for them they don't care. "

I was really happy to see that he knew that what they were doing was wrong. I still don't know why he works there but.... isn't that freaking sick?!
I've watched kids walk up to the enclosures and say that the animals don't look happy. I wonder how many animals die before they are adopted, or later die from something they acquired at the pet store.
I don't remember Petco being such a depressing place when I was a kid
It used to be my favorite place. All the people were knowledgable, the animals seemed happy, and there was always someone around with animals out that people could visit with.
It breaks my heart.
