Papa Smurf - pretty on the inside - full of sweetness

I'd like everyone to meet my new beardie, Papa Smurf. I met Papa Smurf at our local reptile shop last week. He was brought in by two pre-teen girls in a cookie tin, unable to walk, severely malnourished and destined for the freezer. They said they felt sorry for him and hoped he could be helped. He's has a severe case of MBD with jaw, limb and tail deformities. I was drawn to him and I wanted to take him so badly, but we already have our hands full and after the Holidays we were pretty broke.

But then PetCo had a $1/gallon sale and we got two 40-gallon breeders...and there was no excuse for not taking him. The shop owner said he would lend me an entire set-up if we took him saying he knew we would give him a good home, and even though we didn't take him up on the tank and lights loan, I just couldn't leave him there.

May I present the glorious Papa Smurf:

This was him the night I got him, December 28th. It took hours to set up the viv for him and the other new beardie we got that same day (yes we are insane LOL) so he got out of his pet carrier around 11:30pm. He looked so sad:

We gave him a midnight soak and he needed full support in the shallow tub water to keep him from drowning. I was worried I bit off more than I could handle with this sick boy, but after his bath he looked a little bit better. We noticed the blue sand in his eye and used a q-tip soaked in distilled water to gently remove it. Why do people house these poor guys on sand?!? His mouth had sand it in, it was caked on his vent, and his little arms and legs are stained blue. Now you see where he got the name Papa Smurf! He is little, grey-bearded and blue.

I hope this leg can straighten out. He has a really hard time walking because of it. I had some advice on here about vet wrap to protect his scales and I did buy some so we'll hopefully get him rehabilitated to be able to use this leg. I am kinda worried it may be broken or a prior break that healed wrong.

Here he is on December 30th, basking on his little low ladder in his jamming viv. He can't handle furniture right now because he is very crippled and can't really climb or get around, but he doesn't seem to mind. After mounting the UV inside the viv and raising the floor so he can be within about 6 inches, he really perked up. That UV is so important!

Here he is in his little bathtub with 1/2 Pedialyte and 1/2 water. Again he will drown if his head and neck aren't held above the water. He was drinking and drinking and all that thick saliva was running out into the water. After his bath he was swallowing and moving his neck as if we cleared out so much mucous. He looked much more comfortable.

And of course, after the bath we get a snuggle in the towel. He just lays wherever we put him and behaves so sweetly.

And here is how he slept. I was told here in my Beardie ER thread that he needed a night temp of at least 85 degrees since he is sick and it would help his immune system, and it really did make an improvement to the way he woke up the next day. He was much less stiff the next morning and ate breakfast right after waking up.

My husband, Otto, told me Papa Smurf may not survive and you just never know with a sick beardie. He is trying to make sure I have a realistic understanding of Papa Smurf's disease because he knows what a softie I am. I've cried over this little guy so much already. His poo is terrible and we know he has parasites. The medication to treat that is pretty harsh so he is worried the treatment may be too much for him. I've been giving him AcidolphiLiz daily hoping to boost that good gut flora in preparation for future veterinary intervention.

Papa Smurf is a sweet lover of a bearded dragon. He is tough and a fighter but gives the sweetest looks. He truly appreciates us and he knows we are trying to help him. He 100% allows us to do whatever we try to do with him and is a total doll. :love5:

Uh-oh I think I have fallen in love.....

just read this whole thread! dang it im crying now what a story!! :blob5:

Gotta give a huge hand to Pangaea Pets in Gainesville. The guy there took Papa Smurf in and fed and rehabbed him for 3 weeks and literally gave him to me for free if I would continue to rehab and take care of him. He lost money in feeders, a tank and his time out of the goodness of his heart. They're good people.
Thats awesome papa smurf has been blessed!

When you start this journey you're on a hell-of-a learning curve because you already have the sick beardie and you're learning as you go! There is no beardie nursing school! You read, read, read and read some more and ask questions of the veteran beardie rescuers on BeardedDragon.ogr cause they've been there but there's no guarantee anything you do will help or make any difference for your sick little one!

WOW, Amanda - you said everything to sum it all up in that post. You know what all of this takes, I can tell, and the uncertainty and hoping you're doing the right thing, the right way. These dragons are very needy physically and mentally. You're right - for as much forcing what is good for them on them, you also have to love away the memory of it. It is a balancing act. I made the decision and picked up Papa Smurf before researching MBD. We had beardies already and we knew what NOT to do so they don't get MBD, but we didn't know what to DO for him. What it would entail, what we would need to buy, what he could chew or eat or how to get him closer to the UV. I didn't have time to research first - and basically Papa didn't have the time to waste. It's scary to take a life into your home and into your total control, get home, look at this poor creature and then go UH-OH WHAT DO I DO NOW?!?!? This website is the cream of the crop and the people here are stellar. You, among others, have helped me immensely. I thank God for everyone here. I also thank God for Cheryl at beardeddragon.co. We have picked her brain pretty hard and everything we got from her site has been 100% quality.

I'm really lucky he's recovering this well. He could have been worse off. He could have needed immediate veterinary care. I'm going to take a fecal sample to the vet in a few weeks and then have him in for an appointment based on the results. I wanted to get him eating and in better shape before taking him to the vet, and I am glad I waited. If he does need any anti-parasite medication he will be in better shape to have it.

I've been lurking on this thread, following Papa Smurf's progress. You're doing such a wonderful thing for him. It is so rewarding when they start to show some personality and you realize what a huge difference you've made. :love5:

Hi, everyone. Well, Otto and I went on vacation for 4 days in the mountains and we had a friend come and check on our reptiles while we were out, but sadly Papa Smurf had to be boarded. He just needs daily care and the person that was coming by the house couldn't handle that. So I dropped Papa Smurf back at the reptile shop that gave him to me, and I left a huge care sheet.  It was way too much care on the sheet, but I figured if he got half of what was on the sheet it was better than nothing. Honestly I didn't know what to do with him. We've had the vacation planned for a year now and I knew 3 weeks ago when I took in Papa that it wasn't ideal, and it really wasn't. What the hell do people do when they go away?!?! Who honestly has people they trust to take care of reptiles?!?! If it isn't a dog or a cat it's like GOOD LUCK finding anyone. :x

I still feel really bad for boarding him and I'm sad over it. The look he gave me yesterday when I went to pick him up was a mixture of disbelief and incredulity. He really thought that I had abandoned him and taken him back to the shop.     I'm never going on vacation again. It stinks that people take their human kids on vacation, but we can't take our lizards. People frown upon it and when we took Chief to Disney with us I felt like I was smuggling drugs into the resort room. :x  I'd much rather be in a room full of lizards than human children.

I did take a picture of Papa last night as he was trying to burrow into a basket and sleep. I'll post it tonight, even though he still looks pretty sad. Today he was in a much better mood and actually ran from the bedroom into the dining room, skidding to a stop so he could head-bob at Maya.  I hope he gets back to normal soon. He ate like a pig today as if he has never seen food before. Even his syringe-crap. All of it. I think he was glad to be home.

Awww, he knew who you were! That's awesome! To be honest we never went on vacation when we had Digger, maybe a day trip somewhere but that was it. Happy to hear that he is eating too!!!

He sure did know who I was! I was wondering about that, after reading and seeing other people's opinions of reptiles in general, and wanting to know what his reaction would be, especially since I have only had him for three weeks. I could read every little expression on his little face. He totally knows who his Mommy is and he loves her very much. I can't put that into words- what I saw on his face and his body language. I wish I had a video of it. Otto saw it. This look of relief washed over Papa's face when he realized I was the one touching him.

He seems to have gotten over being away from home. He's eating, pooping, head-bobbing and being a sweet little jerk, so I'm very happy. :D  Papa can seem so fragile but he has moments when he is very tough and angry. :angry5:  After black-bearding and head-bobbing at everyone and everything, he sweetly shuts his eyes and puts down his head as I put his blanket on.

Here he is last night after crawling off to sleep in a basket.

He does look comfy. There were even more fluffy and comfy places he could have gone to, but they don't always have the same idea of 'comfy.'

Wow Shannon, Papa Smurf looks so good. He doesn't look like the same dragon you brought home 3 weeks ago! It's so amazing the difference in only 3 weeks. A little love goes a loooong way!

I think we all agree with Kaleen, you have done an exceptional job caring and loving Papa back to health. I am sure that this journey is far from over, but it is so moving seeing how far he has come.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
