Papa Smurf - pretty on the inside - full of sweetness

I'd like everyone to meet my new beardie, Papa Smurf. I met Papa Smurf at our local reptile shop last week. He was brought in by two pre-teen girls in a cookie tin, unable to walk, severely malnourished and destined for the freezer. They said they felt sorry for him and hoped he could be helped. He's has a severe case of MBD with jaw, limb and tail deformities. I was drawn to him and I wanted to take him so badly, but we already have our hands full and after the Holidays we were pretty broke.

But then PetCo had a $1/gallon sale and we got two 40-gallon breeders...and there was no excuse for not taking him. The shop owner said he would lend me an entire set-up if we took him saying he knew we would give him a good home, and even though we didn't take him up on the tank and lights loan, I just couldn't leave him there.

May I present the glorious Papa Smurf:

This was him the night I got him, December 28th. It took hours to set up the viv for him and the other new beardie we got that same day (yes we are insane LOL) so he got out of his pet carrier around 11:30pm. He looked so sad:

We gave him a midnight soak and he needed full support in the shallow tub water to keep him from drowning. I was worried I bit off more than I could handle with this sick boy, but after his bath he looked a little bit better. We noticed the blue sand in his eye and used a q-tip soaked in distilled water to gently remove it. Why do people house these poor guys on sand?!? His mouth had sand it in, it was caked on his vent, and his little arms and legs are stained blue. Now you see where he got the name Papa Smurf! He is little, grey-bearded and blue.

I hope this leg can straighten out. He has a really hard time walking because of it. I had some advice on here about vet wrap to protect his scales and I did buy some so we'll hopefully get him rehabilitated to be able to use this leg. I am kinda worried it may be broken or a prior break that healed wrong.

Here he is on December 30th, basking on his little low ladder in his jamming viv. He can't handle furniture right now because he is very crippled and can't really climb or get around, but he doesn't seem to mind. After mounting the UV inside the viv and raising the floor so he can be within about 6 inches, he really perked up. That UV is so important!

Here he is in his little bathtub with 1/2 Pedialyte and 1/2 water. Again he will drown if his head and neck aren't held above the water. He was drinking and drinking and all that thick saliva was running out into the water. After his bath he was swallowing and moving his neck as if we cleared out so much mucous. He looked much more comfortable.

And of course, after the bath we get a snuggle in the towel. He just lays wherever we put him and behaves so sweetly.

And here is how he slept. I was told here in my Beardie ER thread that he needed a night temp of at least 85 degrees since he is sick and it would help his immune system, and it really did make an improvement to the way he woke up the next day. He was much less stiff the next morning and ate breakfast right after waking up.

My husband, Otto, told me Papa Smurf may not survive and you just never know with a sick beardie. He is trying to make sure I have a realistic understanding of Papa Smurf's disease because he knows what a softie I am. I've cried over this little guy so much already. His poo is terrible and we know he has parasites. The medication to treat that is pretty harsh so he is worried the treatment may be too much for him. I've been giving him AcidolphiLiz daily hoping to boost that good gut flora in preparation for future veterinary intervention.

Papa Smurf is a sweet lover of a bearded dragon. He is tough and a fighter but gives the sweetest looks. He truly appreciates us and he knows we are trying to help him. He 100% allows us to do whatever we try to do with him and is a total doll. :love5:

Uh-oh I think I have fallen in love.....

i wounder if you could splint his leg so that its more in a natural position.

I had initially put the vet wrap on his arm to help him walk better but it was so hard to peel off and his arm is tender. :( :? I figured I would give the liquid calcium more time to strengthen his bones in case trying to remove it was too rough - I was just afraid to break it! Maybe his bones are stronger now and I can use that vet wrap again....?

I found this in the urban dictionary.
Urban Dictionary: Papa Smurf: A wise and noble figure who sets very high standards.

Love his proud, upturned, noble face. He's like "Oh yes I am, who's your Papa now?"

:laughing6: YES that is sooo Papa. Since we got that huge blue tongue skink, Papa has been a little quieter. We put that viv near Papa's but at floor level (Papa is elevated on an ottoman) and Papa can see the skink when he comes out from his hiding places. Papa looks down at him like OH CRAP! :silent: There is a lot less stomping from Papa's viv lately, which is a good thing, because we do get tired of hearing it.

He looks SO much better now, you have done a marvelous job with him!!
The pics are cute
:)

THANKS!! It's so encouraging! I wondered when we took him in if we were going to be able to give him any kind of quality of life at all, or would he be so severely crippled forever. I have my answer - he does enjoy life, even if he is still somewhat crippled. Wonder what he will be like around summertime...?

I love looking at everyone else's pictures, so I was hoping it would be the same here. Beardies are so very expressive.

Thanks! Today he was sitting next to me on the bedroom floor watching me fold kitchen towels. He was really watching me closely. I kept thinking he was going to jump in and help.

Aww, Papa Smurf is a curious guy. Maybe you should try "teaching" him. My husband was able to do that with Miss O (one of our first two) and now Goldie Speedy.

Awesome. :D I don't see why your dragon wouldn't have a bright future ahead of him. You seem to be very willing to learn and adjust his environment, just like I was when I first started. I could list the things that I had in my head that were wrong. You wanna hear them? :p One was the thermometer. I thought it was tacky and I would only put it in there to measure temps once a week. I have learned since that's a bad idea, especially since I have dimmers. That dimmer gets bumped (it's happened) and the temps are off by 10 degrees (that's happened) and you have no way to know unless you are constantly monitoring the temps. I thought about it...what if I was stuck in a room and instead of the A/C being on 74 it was on 84. I hate to be a drama queen but I can't sit in my house if it is 84 degrees. I find it really sad when people won't measure their temps accurately and they think it is 'close enough' and then later they measure and it's 125 in their basking area.

I don't mean to ramble, but I really think the advice on this website can double the lifespan of my dragons. I would have mine housed on sand, with a red heat lamp at night, and a coil UVB if my husband hadn't found this website. How do I know this? Because that's what the pet store sold us when we bought our first dragon.

WOW. :silent:

So very true. The first thing I do when I am about to embark on a project I've never been involved in before is Google. "Topic" Forums. IE: "Bearded Dragon Forums". That's how I found this place. Their were others, and I registered on multiple sites. But once I registered here and noticed 9 people logged in where as their was only 1 on the other sites (Me) I decided this would be the place I started reading at..

And yeah I know the feeling about the Thermometers. I am constantly reaching my hand into the enclosure and zapping different areas with my temp gun and seeing how they are doing. My Digital Thermometer is reading 99*F in the center of the enclosure and quite frankly I wasn't trusting that so for 5 hours yesterday I had bottle caps hanging from all over inside and I was Temp Gauging them to see what their temps were rising to in different locations. Then I was doing surface readings of all my different things that toothless can climb on. As well as readings of the floor of the enclosure all over the place...

Oh yea we have become experts with thermometers, supplements, raising live feeders...

I want a temp gun so badly. I would just play with it all day I bet.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
