painting a store purchased hide.

has anyone attempted something to this effect? I'm in the process of layering grout onto a polystyrene hide, and despite artistic skill with a pen, grout is just not my medium. its coming out decently, but as a backup i can always go out and buy an exo-terra hide, although i have never been fond of the yellowish color. basically, for painting the resin of a cave, would regular artists acrylic be sufficient? and would sealing be required?
