OVERDOSE of metronidazole?

Uh oh.
Do my big boy (600g) beardie is on met. for parasites. I had been administering one drop every 3 days as prescribed by the doc, along with bene bac every day, baby food in a syringe and extra water.
Tonight, he jerked his head to the side while I gave him the meds and instead of roughly a "drop" of meds (between .5 and 1ml), I accidentally shot in the rest of the syringe; about 4-5ml.
I immediately gave him baby food and water and bene bac. It's only been about 20 minutes but I'm beside myself thinking I overdosed him. No black beards, but it hasn't been that long.
Is there anything I can or should do?
Thanks.
Hannah & Norbert :(

That's quite a lot. Is it 50mg/ml? I would provide plenty of water to help flush it through his system, stop offering the meds for now, and contact your vet for advice. If you have activated charcoal that may not be a bad idea to administer too but I'd see what the vet thinks and wants to do. My guess is that it would be harsh on the kidneys so plenty of water to clear it through is likely the best bet for now.

Yes, 50mg/ml.

The crappy part is that it's 8pm right now and I wont be able to get the charcoal to him in roughly 24 hours. But I can put the water and bene bac to him tonight and tomorrow morning before I leave for work.

OK. Do what you can. I would offer small bits of water frequently just to ensure he stays well hydrated and let his system handle the rest. Just don't offer any more meds until you've gotten a chance to speak with your vet for advice.

I emailed my vet & they already replied (nuts, right?)
They said, and I quote, "He's probably okay, just give him lots of extra water."
I usually give 1/2-1 syringe a day, should I double?

Good, I'm glad you have a good vet =). I wouldn't work on a set amount. Just drip some water on his nose a little bit (maybe a min or two) every few hours during the day. Enough so he is plenty hydrated but not enough so he throws it back up. This should clear his system after a bit just don't add more until the vet says to.

Hello,

OH sorry that happened, but accidents do happen like that!
That is shocking your vet wrote back like that, but great to hear.
Do you have any parsley, cilantro or kale in the house you could blend up with some water
to give to him? They bind toxins & help to flush it through their system. He "should" be
ok, but definitely keep him a little warmer tonight, around 80 in his tank to help with his
systems metabolic efforts.
Let us know how he is doing.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
