No Lid on Glass Tank ???

Hey guys so i just got a lamp stand for my basking light and noticed the mesh lid absorbs alot of the heat causing the inside of the tank to not be as hot as it was when it was directly on the mesh . Anyways i know i can buy a stronger bulb but im wondering if i could also just leave the lid off ? Is this a bad idea? Please let me know thanks

I leave the top off of my tank for just that reason. I have the lights suspended on adjustable lamp stands and they just over over the tank. It works well. I wouldn't do this if there are other animals in the house though, as the mesh top provides security from them.
