hi. i have 8 newborn beardies ranging from 2 days to a week old. this is my first clutch of eggs that has hatched. the parents are 18 months old and they are my first ever beardies. i have the newborns in a small tank inside my viv with newspaper bedding, a shallow bowl of water and some small rocks which double as shade. i just need to know about feeding and caring for them. i have tried really small crickets and veg but they're not interestd in either. is this normal? should i just be patient or should i be trying a different food? thanks.

Morning,
Start off by getting them out of the parents viv entirely. The need thier own spaces. At this age you can do 4 per bin.
nothing bigger than 1/4 inch crickets. Offer them everyday in small amount till you see them start to disappear.
Same with the greens. It will take about 2 weeks till you NOTICE the greens being eaten.
Baby's dont always eat right away because they are still living on the yolk sac.

A deep dish can be hazardous... a very shallow dish should be fine - I have seen my local breeder using plastic milk bottle lids as a water dish for babies.

Hi guys. Thank's for the replies but I'm still in trouble. 1 of my 8 newborns died within 2 days of my last post and 2 more died last night. I still can't get them to eat. They seem to be surviving on water and the remaining 5 are extremely weak. Any advice? Anyone??????

Do you have the proper set up ? As far as lightning, correct temps , etc ? Were you planning on breeding the parents, or was this 'accidental' ? Also, if you've had planned on breeding htem, have you done your research ?

I should probably keep my mouth shut, and not say anything, but that would then just be "sweeping this under the carpet" so to speak. I find it upsetting that you would be breeding your beardies with obviously not having done the proper research. Even if you had not done the research before eggs were laid, you have had plenty of time while the eggs were incubating to research and learn how to feed and care for them!! Waiting until they have hatched is not the time to start asking about how to care for them and feed them. This is irresponsible and falls into the category of "backyard breeders" of dogs.
If you really care about your dragons, separate them and don't breed them again. We have plenty of reputable breeders who breed and raise quality beardies. I would not even buy a baby beardie from a private person who just breeds them just because.
I may get flamed for this post, but I don't care...irresponsible breeding is inexcusable.

THanks ! You really made my point on doing the 'research' prior to breeding.

I don't think I need to justify myself [inappropriate remarks removed by moderator] but just for the record, my clutch of eggs was accidental. My local breeder/pet shop assured me I had 2 females. As soon as i saw a clutch of eggs I bought the books, I googled, I did my homework and I bought the necessary equipment. I've followed all the written/verbal and googled advice regarding light/temp etc. They still won't eat. [More inappropriate comments removed by moderator]

I want no part of the flame war but if you want the babies to eat get them away from the close vicinity of the parents or they will not. They may be a bit intimidated by them as in the wild they would be a food source. Therefore they are going to not want to come out an move around to eat as they are afraid. Forgive me if you did and I missed that.

Did you move them?
And have you tried hand feeding some chicken or turkey baby food?
Are you sure they are well hydrated? Do you soak/bath them? Babies dehydrate quickly especially if not eating properly and the more dehydrated the less they are going to have an appetite.

If you don't mind can I ask what UVB bulb your using on the babies and what the temps are?

I edited the above post. You asked for help and suggestions and others were trying to help. Members here get very defensive of beardies, especially little babies. Things can go wrong very quickly as you know. No-one was trying to offend you, just worried about your babies as they totally rely on their owners for proper care.

There are a lot of particulars that need to be set up just right and that's why it's recommended to do lots of research for the proper care. If you could fill us in on their lighting, temps, type of thermometer, etc, it will help us rule things out. Also, removing them from the tank that their parents are in would be a good start otherwise the ones that have survived so far will hopefully be able to calm down away from the stress of possibly being eaten, etc. Stress alone can kill a beardie especially a newborn. If you haven't been bathing them, they very well could be dehydrated, that can cause them to go downhill VERY quickly. Feeding them chicken or turkey baby food diluted with a little water and warmed up a little should help give them a boost of protein. You can put drops on their noses with a plastic medicine dropper or needle-less syringe. Please keep us updated on your little ones and fill us in on lighting, etc when you get a chance.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
