Newbie Enclosure Advice

I have been reading a lot on enclosures for beardies, my ideal enclosure would be a melamine constructed 48x24x24, but since I plan on getting a baby beardie, I have read that may be too big, so for now I am considering using an old 29 gallon fish tank, until about 6 months or so of age then I will build the full size enclosure, does this seem wise to do or does someone have any suggestions, I greatly appreciate any advice.
