I've had Teach for about two weeks. A friend of mine is a reptile educator. She shows her animals at public events, kids' birthday parties, schools, etc. I've enjoyed spending time with her charming beardie while helping her out at a few shows. In January, I kept seeing really adorable photos and videos of beardies online, and started to think about getting one. I discussed it with my fiance, who liked the idea. I thought I should give it, say, ten months of thought and research before deciding. One month for every year of projected lifespan seemed reasonable to me.
In February, I mentioned my interest to my friend. I asked if I could borrow her beardie for a week or two to see how it was taking care of one for a while. We had been fostering a baby snake for her, and she was going to pick up a new baby at a herp show and exchange it for the one we'd fostered. Instead, when she got back from the herp show she emailed me to say that she'd also picked up a rescue beardie who could use some work. She said I could have naming privileges, and if I wanted him, he was mine, and if I'd prefer to get my own baby, no problem. She brought him over about two weeks ago, and it didn't take very long for me to make up my mind. I'm a complete sucker for cute, and Teach is utterly adorable. I wish I'd had a bit more time to make up my mind, but he kind of made it up for me.
We occasionally call him Captain, or the Captain, because he's named after Edward Teach, a.k.a. Blackbeard. He's 3, and only has about half his tail, but that just means his charisma is extra concentrated.
