I wasn't sure which subject to use. Sorry if it's long. I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right.
My husband and I got our bearded dragon on black Friday. And I know I should have done research first but we wanted to get it for our son for Christmas. Since we got the dragon I've spent hours upon hours trying to find out everything I could. We bought the bearded dragon kit (I know BIG mistake). Today I added a hammock, changed the blue day light to a basking spot lamp, changed the florescent coil bulb to a reptisun 10.0 uvb, uva & visible light tube thing, and moved some things around in his tank (might have been a bad idea). I am still using the alfalfa bedding. He/she has been fine with it but I will be switching to a liner.
So here are some of my issues. I am for some reason terrified of trying to hold him. I'm not really sure why. My 7 year old son picks him up (not easy to do though) and my husband picks him up. He has not tried to bite but he runs. I am the only one that takes care of him. I am fine with putting my hands around him to clean his enclosure and even move stuff around. I feed him some times with tweezers. I have given him two baths. The first time I used a wash cloth and towel to pick him up the second time my son picked him up. I sit and talk to him all the time. But when I try to pick him up I'm jumpy. If he even moves I jump. I don't want to be afraid of him. I would love to hold him. Does anyone have any suggestions? Gloves?
Also, after changing and adding things to his enclosure today he was acting a little strange. I know it's probably because of the changes but it still worries me. I don't want the little guy to be stressed out. He of course was watching me closely and was jumpy when I started putting stuff in. I talked to him the whole time and I tried to make sure I moved slow and I would try to make sure he saw what I was adding. When I was done I left him alone for an hour or so. Then I took the lid off and fed him. I gave him a few wax worms with tweezers as a treat and a few meal worms. Then some crickets. This is about the time I noticed a few changes. First, within the small amount of time I left him alone his tail started to shed, he was "glass surfing", and he jumped onto his leaf then onto the edge of the tank like he wanted out maybe? I help the screen lid in front of him so he couldn't jump out and put a wax worm on his hammock to get him down. It didn't seem like he was being aggressive. He never displayed any aggressive behaviors or tried to lunge at me. Could he have just wanted out or wanted me to hold him?
I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right. And more than anything I want to be able to hold him.
