this morning I woke up to a bloated smelly Beardie. :( im just devastated and feel like i am def not cut out to be a reptile mom. Rest in Peace my sweet Pheonix. Thank you all for your care and concern.

I'm so sorry to hear that!
If you truly like beardies I wouldn't let this experience put you off because we learn from our mistakes. My first experience with a beardy was a very small baby who I misted far too much and died from repository problems. Knowing what I know now he wouldn't have died, but I've since gone on to raise two healthy beardie girls.

In short, If you still want one, I'm confident that you could do it now that you know better.

So sorry for your loss...

You have my condolences. :(
Don't be too hard on yourself. You did what you could do and that's what matters. I am sure if you still want to, you could raise a beautiful and healthy beardie when you feel up to it. Plus, you always have us here for guidance!

I am so sorry to hear this terrible news :( It sounds like you were given care of him far too late. If you had him sooner I'm sure you could have adverted this horrible outcome.

Thank You all so much for your kind words and encouragement. I am glad that I found this group. I have decided to give this Beardie thing another shot and have a handsome boy being delivered to me this wknd. The breeder I am getting him from as kindly agreed to deliver him and check out my set up and supplies to insure I am doing it all right. Thanks again everyone for the support.

Hello,

Congratulations, please let us know if you have questions & need help on your setup.

If he makes a recovery please get rid of the walnut crushing. It causes severe impaction and is never good to use. Most recommended flooring is carpet (you can find specific reptile carpeting at a pet store) or even tile. Sand is not recommended but should definitely not be usedisappointed on young BDs. Calcisand is one that some like but I steer away from it. You have also done good on providing heat but you should also be using a UVB light too. It sounds like to me he could be going through brumation. I have not encountered the problem but I've heard people reduce their heat to 80-85 and allow them to take their course for as long as 6 weeks. It's just hibernation, even though this is less common due to breeding in captivity. You need to take him to a exotic specialist and make sure he is okay. But please get rid of the walnut crushings.

He didn't make a recovery if you read the thread.
Also, how did everyone miss the Walnut shells? That's a pretty big miss. (No offense to anyone, just surprised no one else mentioned it) Calcisand is also almost as bad as walnut shells. Not even from a loose substrate perspective, but a much worse impaction issue than regular sand.
But do keep us informed about your new beardie, pheonixsmom!

I must've missed the comfirmation. I was viewing from my phone. And it doesn't cause impaction worse than sand because sand isn't digestible but what causes it so often with calic sand is the fact that beardies are very curious. They will even lick things when they're in a new environment just to memorize the area. When introduced to products like calcisand they are curious and lick it coming to find out they're receiving the same nutrients they're seeking from instinct. The fact is sand is bad because it causes accidental impaction but they will literally lick the calcisand and have the calcium carbonate neutralize their stomach acid and cause impaction. Regardless not worth the risk, I figured I would just give the science behind it.

Yes, it causes worse impactions because it clumps up greater AND they will eat it more. The latter is not a direct comparison, but the former makes it worse than sand in the same quantities. Now lets please not argue anymore on this in this thread, in respect to the lost beardie.

You started the argument and the fact that you believe something that is not digestible is not as bad as something that is (but not easily digestible) scares me lol. I don't see any valid sources telling me about the clumping capabilities of it lol just going by science here because I obviously don't have xray vision like you and your ability to watch your beardie digest lol. But I'm all open to hear more of your arguments, just try to project a valid thesis.

{Posted by moderator: Out of respect to this poor beardie that passed away, please refrain from any further arguing or sarcasm.

It is a known fact that calci-sand hardens in their bellies like cement when they ingest it which makes it impossible or almost impossible to pass. Walnut shells are sharp like pieces of glass and when eaten, it can cut their insides when trying to get it out. Any type of loose substrate can also breed bacteria because it is impossible to clean up all the liquid and waste from feces. That is the reason why solid substrates are recommended]

I asked you kindly to stop arguing. If you want to argue it, start a new thread. I'm not responding to anything more about it here.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
