Hey there,

As you can see in my tag, I'm based in NJ and just wanted to know of others in the area. It would be helpful possibly for emergency situations, or even just having someone to talk to locally about our beloved pets. I'm also interested in knowing the best places for veterinary care would be, right now I have a 40min trip to Marlton. I hope to here from other locals in the NJ, eastern PA, Southern NY area.

Thanks,

Drew

Hello, Drew-
I'm in south Jersey, about 40" from Marlton as well. We just adopted 2 beardies and I'm in the process of getting everything all set up for them. Just bought two 40B tanks from Petco today ($1 a gallon sale). Don't know of any good vets, but I'd bet Dale does (www.dalesbeardeddragons.com). He's a breeder in north Jersey.

I'm hoping that I take such good care of them that a vet won't ever be necessary! :D

Hi! I'm in Essex County in Northern Jersey. I have NO idea where a good herp vet is around here, so I'd love some suggestions as well.

This is my first post; we just adopted our first beardie yesterday and found out that our tank (which was purchased last weekend) is too small for the juvenile that we got. So tomorrow I'll be taking advantage of that Petco sale; for now I'm reading up on lights and rocks and substrate--oh my! Such a lot to learn but it promises to be an adventure! I've wanted a beardie for ages and love ours already.

Yeah, jump all over that 40 gallon breeder tank for $40.00! It's nice because it's 18" wide. As far as substrate goes: I went to Lowes and bought two 18" tiles to put on the bottom. I didn't even know they made them that large! I had them trim them down to 17.5". Our beardies poop frequently, so the tile is an easy clean up. I read somewhere that white vineager cut in half with water is a safe cleaning solution. I also read that http://www.petmountain.com has good prices; http://www.herpsupplies.com is good, too.

I'm going to create some fake rock structures as created by this guy at http://www.lizard-landscapes.com.

I'm just figuring everything out myself, too; I've already decided to eschew crickets; I think I'm going to go with hornworms from http://www.greatlakeshornworm.com. Or maybe superworms; we'll see. As for the lighting (UVB), Reptisun 10 is the way to go I believe. I'm just trying to figure out how to integrate my fluorescent bulb with my heat bulb....

Well, that's just some of the stuff I've gleaned from here. Good luck!

Yeah, the tile sounds like a great idea! I'd like to get a piece of scrap soapstone in there as well somehow, since it holds heat well and is naturally warm. I was just reading the first care sheet which suggests using bleach to disinfect but the vinegar sounds much safer.

Hiya and welcome! I live in Lansdale, work in Wrightstown NJ and Philly! Know of a great herp vet in Philly and one in Bensalem, have talen Digger to both! (the one in Bensalem once when Digger threw up, the guy was awesome, but for non-emergencies I still take him to Dr Dennish in Philly) Digger is 7 and 1/2 years old now and still the same as he was when he was little:)

Enjoy the site, its awesome!

Hi,

Im from bergen county here. Thanks for the heads up about the petco $1 sale! Apparently they only do their sale once a year, but this is the second time.

I've heard of one reputable herp vet in my area, although I've never been to him so I cant give first hand experience. A local pet store told me about a Dr. Boren. He's the vet for our local zoo. But the place he works at is an animal hospital, open 24 hours. Theyre pretty expensive. But yeah, I've heard of him if youre looking for the northern NJ area.

Soapstone sounds good, but my only concern would be if it is porous or not. If it were, you could try sealing it with a non-toxic sealant.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
