New Dubia Colony

After reading some threads here I decided to order from The Roach Guy. It wasn't easy convincing the roomies to allow roaches in the house but after explaining to them that these kinda aren't the kinda that will infest a house it was set as ok as long as I was UBER careful. I brought it up two months ago and they don't even realize they're here already.

So I ordered Monday afternoon and received today, Saturday. You've no idea how much I despise the post office right now. The dubia got into Portland Thursday night...and yet they couldn't get them 2hrs south by 4pm the next day? Priority shipping is 2-3days, however, the post office just shrugs and says well it's gonna be 4 days instead. Literally. I went down to the post office and asked where my package was and he said it wasn't a guarantee of 2-3 days... However, pay for overnight shipping and something can get from FL to WA in 24hrs. Hmmm...anyways. Got the box this morning and it completely skipped my mind to take pictures until after I had opened it. I was more concerned with the racket my dogs were making flipping out cause I closed them out of my room in order to open it.

I ordered his 120 mixed with the free adult pair and 3 extra pairs. At a time that not many suppliers are willing to give up any adults, especially females, Jason was really nice and hooked me up as I had contacted him before a couple months ago wanting to get this colony going but then I got in my fender bender and my autoimmune acting up took away my spare $. Despite the late package, the heat pack being near dead cold by the time it got here, they were no worse for wear, a little sluggish perhaps. There was only one casualty of an extra small nymph that got stuck on the tape of the box as it tried to escape when I opened it. This is my first experience with dubia and let me tell you it was an interesting mix between fear and awe. I have a little pair of those yellow plastic tweezers but found I don't trust those so will be getting the long steel ones with the rubber tip. I scraped the dubia from the box into a large glass bowl so that I could inspect it, yes, I'm anal about everything and wanted to make sure everything was right. It's how every order should be as we are only humans and in a business sometimes mix-ups can happen. Anyways, I looked at that egg carton in the bowl and didn't even want to stick my hand near it now. I got a piece of egg crate and squeemishly tricked the adults onto it one by one and transferred them into the bin. When it came to the nymphs I would pick up the egg crate piece they came with, place mine underneath and then flip their current one upside down so the nymphs were exposed to the light and then some would scurry down to my piece where I'd then get my piece, take a quick count and put it into the bin and wait for them to scurry off of it. It got down to the point where it almost became a challenge of my will and I started picking up the smaller ones one by one from the bowl with my hand and putting them in my bin. I was pleased, I won the last half of the battle, though it took me about an hour to do so.

IMG_1098.jpg

After setting them up and watching them for a minute seeing as some of the nymphs weren't too scared to come out being hungry and thirsty I realized I don't like my bin. I thought my babies were dying as I kept seeing a lot of them on their backs but found that when they were trying to climb the small hump on the bottom they'd fall over. I didn't think much of the small bump but considering they're so small it must be like climbing Mount Everest every time they want to eat or drink. So tomorrow I'm going to Target or Walmart to get a new bin and transfer them over. I've seen the adult males and at least one adult female out and eating and drinking and several extra small and larger nymphs in the food and water but I'm still concerned about the flipping when they're trying to get to it. I'm waiting on the heat mat to be delivered so for now I have the bin wrapped in my extra comforter and my room heater sitting by it. I'll post more pictures after I get them transferred.

++In all it was a good experience, I recommend The Roach Guy, Jason. The dubia were a good price, arrived packaged nicely, alive, and I always got a response from him to any questions I had within a couple hours so good customer service as well. :D +++

He was where I got my first roaches from too, 3 or 4 years back. He i a great guy to buy from.

Your setup looks good, hopefully you will have tons of babies running around soon!

Transferred them to their new bin. It's a bit bigger and I know people say they need to feel crowded but this way I know for sure everyone is able to get to the food and water. My puppy approves. He would not let me shoo him from the room...he needed to see what the heck I'm trying to hide from him in the bin.

Also, is there a trick to getting the packing tape on the bin? For the life of me it ends up crooked and I can't use too big of a piece at a time, say if I wanted to use one long strip around the whole thing. I had to cut it into about half the size of each side and piece it together.

Haha, well if you find the trick tell me. I had a horrible time trying to do it, I eventually gave up and just ripped it all off lol.

question about how often you should lift the lid and bother them.. Right now I have been feeding them every 2-3 days. what I mean is I lift the lid and take about about 40 or so mid sized roaches for feeding. put new food and such in there then close the lid. The roaches obviously hate this and scatter like mad. I dont like bothering them because it interupts their mating and eating. how long should you wait before you bug them? 2-3 days ok? or should it be closer to 5 days to a week?

thanks

Try no more than once a week.. Ideally you shouldn't be feeding out of your breeding bin anyways so eventually you can have 2 separate bins, 1 for breeders and the other for feeders. (More if you separate by size) This will allow you to not have to bother your roaches but for a couple times a month. Also if I do have to add food or want a peak I do so in the dark with minimal light. If you have your whole room lit up every time you open them then it makes it worse. Doing it where its dark I feel I am not bothering them much to matter. (Other than clicking open the lid)

If you how ever are literally opening your bin in the middle of your room (like the pics) full light and rummaging through your bin disturbing the egg flats and pulling out feeders than that is a HUGE problem.. Try putting some paper towel rolls in there for them to group in so that you aren't disturbing the flats. Opening the lid and bothering them is bad enough but actually disturbing the eggflats is pretty frowned upton.

I never move the egg crates and the pics are bright because of flash. Normally I have them hidden under my puzzle table in the corner of my room that blocks light from my room going through their mesh. I rarely even open the lid, I peek through the mesh screen to see how their food and water levels are. If you're going to be feeding roaches then yes, when you go through your cleaning routine about once a month then you should do all your separating and gathering of feeders then. If you disturb them every couple days like that then you reduce their production tremendously. Set up a 2nd bin and put all your feeders in there, you don't need a heat mat for that one since you don't want them to grow or reproduce in that bin anyways.

cowabunga,

well I hand feed my dragon (its the only way he will eat now haha)

So what I am gathering is to have 1 large bin and leave all the adults and mid size guys in there for breeding and put all the babies and just under mid size ones in another bin to take out every few days to feed from?

I got back in late october/early november about 100 roaches. a good amount of smaller ones and the rest large adults with a ratio of 4 to 1 or so I think females to males. right now I would say I have about 3 to 4 flats pretty busy with roaches. majority are between baby size and mid size. looks like about 10-15% or so are perfect feeding size - about 1 1/2 to 3/4 inch long. and then i would say about 80% are small about 1/4 inch or so. the rest are the big guys.

Yep, and best of all the feeder bin shouldn't need heat if it is kept in doors above 70s.

I'm not sure if you are familiar with my Dubia thread-

nice set up. so they are good at finding food? I feel if it put the food in a shallow bowl they cant get in there

If they can climb it they will find it.. If your humidity is right the scent will be strong and carry throughout the colony. They'll do the rest lol. People put too much thought into these things. Roaches are the hardiest and longest surviving creatures on earth. They were here long before us and will be here long after.

So I cleaned out the bin today for the first time since I got them beginning of February. I started with 5 males, 5 females, and 139 nymphs. Today counted 7 males, 8 females, and 140 nymphs. I had 1 male casualty first week which was expected and now that there are a lot of large nymphs that are 1 molt from being adults and. I'll be taking 5 males down to my local reptile store tomorrow for treats for their tarantulas. What this also means is that there have been only 9 new baby additions. Is this normal for the first month? They have temperatures from 88-90, I have a flexwatt that I'm going to be trading my heat mat for soon so that the output is more regular and can bump it to low nineties, there's food and water crystals, and orange slices about two to three times a week.

I try to keep relatively calm and low level noise in my room but with two dogs and a toddler nephew who comes over sometimes it can get a bit noisy during the day. I haven't started my new job yet so I haven't been able to buy any styrofoam to build an insulated box to move them to the garage. Do you think that's the only real factor keeping them from multiplying as roaches should? They are otherwise hidden from light so that isn't a problem.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
