Hi all

I hatched a beardie two days ago. He looks like a normal baby only that he has three limbs coming out of his stomach. His four other legs look normal. Strangely enough there is also a huge cut down his belly that exposes his insides. He is still alive though. He is also very fat. The baby is alert and has energy.

What can be done? Can the extra legs be amputated? What's up with the cut down his belly?? Does he have any hope??

All advice is appreciated
thanks for reading

Hello Eric,

Could you post a picture of the baby? I can't say I have ever heard of anything like that before?
The slit down the middle of the belly is the navel where they are attached to the yolk sac in the egg. They are supposed to absorb their yolk sac after birth which nourishes them with vital elements necessary for starting out life & boosting their immune systems.

I'd say there's hope, but he would probably need some vet help. Maybe X-rays to see if the extra legs would affect any organs.

It sounds like he was suppose to be a twin, but the separation was unsuccessful, thus the open abdominal cavity and extra limbs.

Not sure if anything could really be done for him. You might want to consult with a very experienced herp vet (as soon as possible) to see if he/she could at least close up the open cavity, then address the extra limbs later on.

How interesting!

There are many tales of animals being able to live successful, healthy lives with extra limbs. Maybe this can be one of them if proper care and precautions are made. I would definitely agree with a vet visit and an xray, just to see how things are working on the inside for the little guy and to try and make sure that growth isn't going to cause any irreparable damage. It's good that he/she is active and eating, very good.

And now for the selfish part, got any pictures? :D I think we'd all love to see this little beardie! Not to mention it might help some of the more knowledgeable folks in giving advice for you.

Good luck!

I have never experienced the extra appendages, but I have experienced the open belly. For the little ones that I have had with the open belly, I put them in a sterile container with sterile gauze lining the bottom. I found some sterile saline and kept the bottom moist and clean. I think it took about a week of this constantly and the belly healed itself. The container I had was just big enough for the baby and kept it in the incubator, this way he wouldn't move about too much and it was a quiet environment.

I hope this helps, let us know and do please show us a photo. It is intriguing that you have such an amazing creature on your hands! :)

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
