New Beardie Owner

Hi all -

I recently (about 3 weeks ago) adopted a baby Beardie.

I teach 7th grade History, and wanted a class pet.

So - questions from the kids : (which I have "adulted" up)

1) How much do they grow?

2) When are they adults?

3) How much do they sleep a day? When do they sleep most?

4) Will it ever shed?

5) When will we be able to tell if it's a boy or girl?

1) An adult bearded dragon can be anywhere from 18-24" long from tip of the nose to tip of the tail... depending on genetics, husbandry and feeding habits. Most are fully grown (for the most part) by one year.

2) As I said, most are fully grown at a year old. I'm not sure when they become sexually mature, as I don't breed. I'm sure someone else will fill that information in if you wish.

3) Bearded dragons are daytime animals. They sleep at night. Mine usually sleep around 12-14 hours a night, depending on the time of year.

4) Yes, it will shed. A lot as a baby. Mine shed as much as once or twice every two weeks when it was growing. (They grow VERY fast with proper care)

5) Some are fairly easy to tell if they're males when they're younger but unless you take it to a vet, you won't be able to tell until it's 8 or 10" or bigger, depending on the dragon.
