I just have a couple questions. This is my first reptile. I've done a lot of reading on here and I ordered a book yesterday which should arrive tomorrow. I picked up my baby beardie the other day on Saturday 3/4/17. I realize that It can take anywhere from a week to a month or 2 for him to adjust. He his active. I have a small 10 gallon tank for now since I had one handy and it has been cleaned prior to pick up. I plan on making my own tank vs spending a a lot on a 40 gallon or bigger tank.

His coloring is good. His tail is whiter than the rest, he has been rubbing his head on the log that is in their which i read can indicate a pre shedding habbit (right?). He's very active and alert. Likes to be held. I have a timer for the basking light from 9am to 9pm, I work 2pm-11pm. I come home to feed him on my lunch break around 7pm. The basking area is 95 degrees and he has two logs to hide under.

He has pooped once in his water dish the day after I bought him, I did clean it right after that. It's only time he's pooped which concerned me. But I did read it's normal for him to eat less during the shedding process and after moving to a new home. I do mist him once or twice a day, until I actually see signs of him shedding then I'll then misting him more. Also how many times a day should he be pooping or how frequently should it be

I'm having a hard time getting to eat veggies. He'll eat a small piece of strawberry but no more than that. He'll drink from his dish once in a while. I'm making a back drop to stick on the outside of the back and sides of his tank to make him feel more at home. He has zero interest in kale or other veggies so far. I've read to feed him insects one day, veggies one day, and nothing the next. I take out the crickets he doesn't eat. I do feed the crickets. His water dish is shallow so he doesn't fall in and drown. I use tap water with the zoo med balancing stuff that makes it safe for him to drink. Substrate is kind of like a felt material. I got him at a petsmart. His label said fancy bearded dragon. He's active at when left alone and likes to be held. He'll sleep in my hoodie pocket when I'm on my bed. I do have 2 cats. I shut my door when I leave for work so they can't pester him. Is there anything else that I can do? I've tried all the tricks I've read to get him to eat veggies and I understand that it takes time. I can post pictures too

You'll want to get him into a bigger viv asap. 10gal is far too small even for a little guy.

The basking area is 95 degrees and he has two logs to hide under. 95 degrees is too cold. The basking spot for juvenilles needs to be at LEAST 105, no higher than 115. You can do a few things to accomplish this: raise his basking spot, lower the light, or purchase a stronger basking bulb. A clear white (non-CFL) incandescent will work well. I'd say 75w to start with.

My beardie takes one big dump a day (lol). If he's not eating much, he won't poop much either. Once in four days isn't very much. I would put him in a warm bath to try to stimulate a bowel movement. You can also try to feed baby food as that will act as a gentle laxative for him.

I can post pictures too. Don't worry about a lack of interest in veggies at his age. Mine is 7 months old and only within the last month did she start eating her salads. However, you'll still want to offer a salad daily. He will eventually start to show interest! Make sure you use leafy greens such as collard, mustard, turnip or dandelion. No kale or spinach as they bind to calcium, and no iceberg lettuce or cabbage because they lack in nutrition.

As I said I'm making a 40 gallon custom tank. I've looked at people's tanks on here that have been posted and google. I have a 75 watt bulb. I can lower the bulb. I'm buying a heating pad to stick on the side of the tank to keep it a little warmer than my house temp at night which is about 70. I did give him a bath. Luke warm. He wasn't too fond of it. So I'll have to work him into it

Agreed, definitely take it slow with the baths. Mine hated it at first. Now it's her favorite place to poop... well, aside from her hammock.

Your best bet for warmth at night is a ceramic heat emitter. any sort of light (red light, black light, etc) can be seen by your beardie, and it will likely disrupt his natural sleep cycle. CHEs provide heat without light and last a very long time. My room is a bit cool at night, so I use one for my beardie as well.

40 gallons is okay for a juvenille beardie but it will end up being too small for an adult. The rule of thumb is that a repitle should be able to fit, nose to tail, in any dimension. These tanks are usually 36lx18wx17h or 48lx13wx17h yet many beardies grow to be well past 13-18 inches. It's just something to keep in mind so you don't end up spending money and time on creating a lovely viv that's too small for him when he's fully grown.

I wanted to make sure this is addressed.
I am unsure where you read this from but please, offer insects 2-3 times daily. Salads can be offered daily as well, whether they eat them or not, but they should never go a day without feeders

Agreed! 2-3 feedings a day, and for each meal feed until they are full and no longer interested!

I probably annoy the h*ll out of my dragons with how often I offer food. I get like a grandparent.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
