- Beardie name(s)
- Mushu
Hi everyone, I’m new to reptile keeping and this website. I have a couple concerns with my beardie, Mushu.
Background info: I’ve had him for almost 6 months now and I don’t have a for sure age but he is around 10-11 months old. He is 18” long and weighs 435g. I just recently moved him to a 4’x4’x2’ front opening enclosure about 2-3 weeks ago. He has a 34” 10.0 T5 HO linear uvb, his basking spot is always around 95-100 degrees, the cool side is around 75 degrees, and he has a ceramic heat emitter for night. I try to keep his humidity around 30%-40% though it will sometimes reach around 45%. (I will try to attach images of him and his enclosure).
My first concern is that he has not been eating as much as he used to. Usually he’d eat 15-25 a day but now I’m lucky if he eats 10. He has on and off days. Sometimes he’ll eat 15 then the next day he will eat 1. This has been going on for almost a month now. I feed him crickets, dubia roaches, and occasionally meal worms. He is still active, strong, and has not lost any weight (he’s actually gained weight). He does not have any trouble eating his salads though (usually dandelion greens with fruits here and there).
My second concern is that the uvb may be too strong. I cannot afford a uvb reader so I’m not sure the level he is getting but as I said before he has a 10.0 T5 HO linear uvb. The closest he can get to the uvb is around 9-10” and it is mounted on the inside of his enclosure. I keep thinking it’s too high a level because I see him in his hide more often. I’m not sure if this is because of the uvb or not because in his old enclosure he’d rarely use it but now he uses it almost on a daily. If it is too much, should I get a lower platform?
My third concern is that he’s had this dark patch of skin from his mid to lower back. At first I thought it was shed but after he shed the patch was still there. I couldn’t find a lot but I thought it may be a mild case of yellow fungus disease because I saw a picture online that looked similar. If so what could have caused it and how do I treat it? This patch has been on him since mid December 2021 and it’s now February 2022. It is less noticeable at times. (I will attach pictures of his spot in different lightings). His tank is deep cleaned every 2 weeks and he gets baths 2-3 times a week. If you look at the pictures you can see that his head, back, and tail are all different shades. It has been like this for a while even after shedding. Is that something to be concerned about?
