I’m a bit worried about my new dragon, and I wanted to see if you guys had any input as to possible courses of action that I could take to help get her better. I recently had her tested for parasites, and her fecal came back positive for coccidia. I treated her for a week with Albon, and then took in another sample. I got the test results back for that about five minutes ago. It’s still positive, but I was told that there has been a marked improvement and that I should restart her course of antibiotics.
Throughout the first week of treatment, her appetite was severely suppressed (as I very much expected), but she otherwise seemed healthy. She was very playful and full of energy to the point that she wore me out trying to chase her across the apartment. The last two days, however, she has been fairly lethargic, and she vomited up some crickets yesterday morning. She’d only taken seven of them, and she hasn’t been eating much of her greens, so it’s not that she was overfed. I’m always really careful when I have her out of her cage to make sure that she doesn’t accidentally swallow something she shouldn’t. Is it possible that the coccidia is what has upset her little tum so badly? Could something be wrong with the last batch of crickets that I bought for her? Or is there something else I should be looking into?
How old is your dragon? The store I bought her from told me about 5 or 6 months.
How long have you had your dragon? Three to four weeks.
How long is your dragon? I would estimate about nine inches. I haven’t measured her yet, and I’m at work at the moment. I’ll check when I get home if necessary.
What is the sex of your dragon? Suspected female.
What size enclosure do you have your dragon in? She’s in a temporary 10 gallon tank until we get her coccidia cleared up. Then I'll be putting her in a much larger tank.
What type substrate do you have on the bottom of your tank? Paper towels or newspaper. Whichever is more readily available when I clean out her tank.
Do you use UVB lights? Yes.
If so, Is it a coil, compact, fluorescent tube, or Mercury Vapor bulb? MVB
What is the brand name and number of your bulb? Wattage (if MVB)? I want to say Solar-Glo, but I can’t remember the wattage off the top of my head. I’ll check this when I get home as well.
How old is your UVB bulb? I installed it the same day I brought her home.
How close can your dragon get to the UVB? About a foot.
Do you use a separate basking bulb? What kind and what is the wattage? No.
What are the basking temps? 103 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit.
What is the cool side temp? 83 to 87 degrees.
Do you take the temps with a stick on thermometer, a digital thermometer with a wire and a probe end or a temp gun? Digital.
Where exactly are you taking your basking temps? The end of the probe is positioned on top of her “log” where she sits.
Do you use a heat rock or heat pad? Neither.
What do you feed your dragon? Please be specific. Mustard, turnip, and collard greens with occasional and various fruit that she never eats, feeder insects of some sort (I was using crickets, but I bought some meal worms yesterday to see if they would agree with her stomach better. She’s had two of them so far), and some Rep-Cal juvenile bearded dragon pellets soaked with bottled water.
How often do you feed and what time do you feed (morning, afternoon, night)? I feed her insects once before I go to work (about 9:30 AM) and once when I get back from work (about 6 or 7 PM). She also has greens, fruit, and food pellets that stay in her cage until about an hour before her lights go off. I replace those as necessary throughout the day. Finally, since her appetite petered out, I've been feeding her squash and green bean baby foods through a syringe.
Do you gutload (feed) your crickets, worms, etc? The crickets were being gutloaded with green bean, squash, and applesauce baby foods. I have not yet set the worms up with any particular gutload.
Do you use vitamin or calcium supplements? What brand(s)? How many days a week do you use each of them? I’m using T-Rex Dragon Dust for the moment until I can order some Rep-Cal supplements off the Internet. I dust her greens and baby food with it every day.
Is your dragon having regular bowel movements (poops)? She was every day when I first brought her home, but since I started the antibiotics, she’s only been going about every other day, and each poop is very small.
Do you bath your dragon? How often? About every day. Sometimes I miss a day, and sometimes she gets more than one in one day (if she makes a real mess with her poop).
Do you mist your dragon or offer water other than in the bath? I tried to mist her once, and she really didn’t like me for it. Occasionally, I’ll drop some water on the end of her nose, but she normally doesn’t take it that way either. Hence the frequent bathing.
Does your dragon share an enclosure with another dragon? She was sharing a cage with one other female at the pet store, but she’s the only one in the house for now.
Have you gotten a vet check and fecal done? The vet check went well. I’ve got a really good herp vet, and he seemed pleased with her all around. The fecal was positive for coccidia and a really sparse population of pinworms that we aren’t treating for. After being treated with Albon for a week, her second fecal is also positive for coccidia, but it supposedly looks a lot better than the first.
