New baby beardie

Hey guys, this is sweet pea the newest addition to our family. I got him two weeks ago so far he's going great eating like beast especially his nature zone bites and crickets. When I got him I figured I should of asked how old he/she was when we got it at petsmart. The first day I carried him and he seemed comfortable he just hung out on my hand for a while and when I try to put him down he did not want to let go lol. Last night I tried to pick him up and it seemed he was like giving me the stink eye for trying to pick him up during basking time. Should I wait until I turn it off to carry him after?

From the picture do you beardie parents have an idea how old he/she is?
Proper lighting I have uvb 10 watts and basking light is 50 watts, is that ok?

Handle him when you want to, not when he wants you too. He has to get used to being handled. I would suggest you replace the nature bites with greens, he needs to learn to eat greens now.
UVB is good, heat bulb wattage isn't really important as long as his basking area is reaching proper temps? What are the temps? How are you measuring them?
You should also know that the substrate you are using can be very dangerous, even fatal. Babies should always be on solid flooring like paper towels or tile. Adults can be kept on playsand with minimal risk but its cleaner if you use slate or rough ceramic tile.

Sounds like he has a good appetite already.

It's hard to tell in the picture if you're using sand or crushed walnut shells but as Gail mentioned, a loose substrate isn't good especially for a baby. They lick everything as they are very curious so it's much safer to use a solid substrate. Also, loose substrates breed bacteria because it's impossible to remove all the waste's liquid from it.

What brand UVB are you using and is it a compact, coil or fluorescent tube? Also, is it a 2.0, 5.0, 8.0 or 10.0? What distance do you have it and is it right alongside a bright white basking light?

I changed his bedding into the reptile bedding I started to give him green veggies today. I cleaned his entire tank, poor thing I found some ants in there and it freaked me out, but no worries I believe it was the sand that brought them in. I gave him a bathe today in his little tub and he loved it just hung out and enjoyed it. I was able to pick him up this afternoon and he liked it, I guess he smelled my hand and figured it was me and jumped right one. Do you guys have an idea how old he is?

What do you mean by reptile bedding?

Beardies shouldn't be on loose substrate like wood chips, sand, etc.

I know he's not suppose to be on sand that's why I changed it to the carpet.


The brand is repti glo 10.0 uvb light it's a coil blub. It's about 12 inches away from the basking light.

That's so true I hate it, it come mean one thing and it's a other lol it happens to my fiance and I all the time

You will need to get the proper UVB bulb. You are looking for a Repti-Sun 10.0 fluorescent (tube) bulb or an Acadia 12% tube bulb.. Mount it inside the tank with 3M command hooks .
