New baby bearded dragon brumation?

Hi all! My son wanted a bearded dragon so I got him a thrive 40g starter kit for Christmas. After I came home I started doing research and realized that the kit wasn’t really everything you need to take care of a bearded dragon so the last two weeks I fixed the tank bought new light, heat gun, solar meter dimmer for basking light because temp was getting to hot in basking area and got my 300 dubia roaches delivery and setup a big container for them to start gut loading. Yesterday I finally went with my son and purchased his bearded dragon and brought it home. He hasn’t moved for the past 16 hours is he going into brumation ? Maybe adapting to new enviroment? Is the tank maybe to big for a baby ? I don’t know how old it is they said maybe 1-2 months at the pet store. I’ve been reading mixed opinions on brumation (if it is brumation) should I try to wake it up or leave for another day or two? I have attached a few pics of tank setup the slate tile on top of hammock has been removed it was there to help me get a accurate temp on heat gun to setup basking spot. Also attached is a pic of the bearded dragon and it’s been in that same position since we got it.

You have a good UVB make sure your distance is 8-10 inches directly above the basking decor -- I would recommend getting two digital probe thermometers -- they are the most accurate -- the IR gun is good but certain materials like hammocks they cannot read off of--- place the probe where he would sit for basking - babies DO NOT brumate -- I am hoping you did not get a sick dragon --- they will go thru relocation stress so his eating will be off but he should be eating something --- I would take out the vines for now so you can take care of him and see what hes doing--- slate materials run hot--- please get the probes and go from there you want temps 105-110 for him for surface basking temps- please start w/ salads now as well -- I would order him some BSFL www.symtonbsf.com start w/ medium size they are a small larvae and are a great staple feeder and lure to the salad bowl - add them to his salads in front of him first feeding of the day use as many as you want and they are a great compliment to the roaches - they will come in a dirt leave them in the dirt and I recommend you wash them off before serving - he needs calcium D3 dusted on the dubias one time per day at one feeding 5 x per week --- vitamins w/ beta carotene 2 x per week dusted on the dubias one time per day -- MOM you are going to haft to help here --- dragons are a complex animal and need to be watched w/ their behavior they will hide their illnesses and sometimes kids just cant catch it --- I do not recommend them for childrens pets --- once you get the surface basking temps correct and the UVB of which it looks like it is you should be good - it will take the little guy to adjust to his tank and surroundings - I recommend no taking out of the tank for quite awhile - hes going thru stress - you want to make sure hes getting hydration --- drop water on his nose or use a eye dropper - his appetite will increase as he gets adjusted to the tank and surroundings - hes probably got stress marks on his tummy now-- I am gonna post a nutrition website for you -- ignore the kale info its outdated Nutrition Content
here is a good salad bowl https://www.amazon.com/MACGOAL-Rept...uGQB&pd_rd_wg=tLkwE&ref_=pd_gw_ci_mcx_mr_hp_d
you will also need a digital probe hygrometer for the tank analogs are inaccurate
Place the probe on the back center wall of the tank -- optimal humidity is 40-50% nothing under 20 and over 70%

Hi! Thank you for your reply I set the probe on lower side of hammock It’s reading 100 it moved and is been basking there for hours probably a few degrees higher which I will move probe higher. I took a dubia roach and grabbed it with the feeding tong but the roaches are to small so I dropped 2 in the tank trying to get it close to his mouth. I found a small plastic container and was dusting the roaches one at a time in a ziplock bag and putting it in the container. I would bring it up to him in the hammock and he ended up eating 9. Two he ate from the hammock that escaped from container hopefully he finds the other two somewhere in the tank. His roaches that I bought are loving the carrots they ate that much yesterday and I just added fresh carrots to the small tank I got them. I tried giving the bearded dragon carrots yesterday he didn’t touch them I’m going to try a salad now. I will order bowl that you recommended and food just need to order the multivitamins should I go with Reptical brand ? I attached additional photos and also took your advise for the water it looked like it was drinking a little from the drops that I was putting on his mouth. I know that us parents will be taking care of the bearded dragon my son just turned 6 he won’t be to much help lol.

Ok yea your son is too young for the dragon but he can help :) --- please dont feed the dragon carrots too - to much Vit A -- I would get some dubia food and dubia dew for the roaches and you can feed them what you feed the dragon - I have found they are not hot on greens but like fruit like oranges grapes -- raw shredded sweet potato squash -- the Reptical is fine --- you wont need the w/ out D3 till hes around a year old -- please get him a multi vitamin w/ beta carotene ---- you want the temps 105-100 --- its good hes eating -- that is a good sign - his appetite will increase as he gets adjusted to his tank etc--- be patient w/ him -- I would get the BSFL and use them to hand tame him and in his salad bowl -- your son can feed them to him in the tank --- get a piece of clothing or fleece blanket and put inside the hide -- he will come accustom to your smell -- he needs to learn to trust -- may take some time -- hes pretty young

I ordered 1000 but just realized that I ordered small and not medium I guess I will try these out and order the mediums after. I will switch to sweet potato and get some roach food. I saw some videos on youtube feeding carrots and apples so I went with the carrots. I was told at the pet store to use the calcium d3 only twice a month and without the d3 every other day and the days in between vitamins. Do these no escape bowls work for the roaches I didn’t realize they are that fast and I don’t want to grab the dragon and put him in separate container to feed him roaches until he get’s used to us.

Escape bowls work good for the smaller roach's after getting to medium size or large not so much but they are great salad bowls --- please do not listen to the pet store people - please dust the insects w/ D3 once per feeding / day 5 x per week - apples are good to feed --- what I hate about the fruit are the fruit flys that show up out of no where --- your baby is growing and you want the D3 for his bones -- your UVB is going to help him absorb / synthesize that calcium hes eating -- feed your BSFL first on the salads use as many as you want to feed him as they are a great staple for babies -- the roaches can be added later to the bowl like an hr or so depending on how many of the BSFL he eats --

Yes I will dust with d3 5x a week and I definitely don’t wan’t any fruit flies wife is already not happy with the roaches lol. How long should I wait for a bath he already pooped on his hammock I wiped it down a bit and he probably already went in it doesn’t smell to good in there. My son is excited but definitely not a cheap pet to keep lol and why are those solar meters 250 bucks lol

Good ones are expensive - you can use vinegar and water 50/ 50 to clean tank-- use a wet cloth afterwards to get rid of smell of vinegar - the hammock is a grass or green mesh?

Wow lol
A solar meter?
Those are expensive.
Well you must be doing everything as efficient as you possibly can.

They make UVB/UVA cards that are much cheaper.
10-20 bucks.
If you want take the solar meter back and buy one of these.
REPTI ZOO UVB Tester
You got 2 for 7.99 & can be used up to 500X ea.
But they do come in handy

I have been told those cards are inaccurate- I think CooperDragon has tested them or Brandon --

Ok I would replace w/ a cloth or fleece- those have a nasty habit for causing nail and foot injuries - www.etsy.com

Once he get’s comfortable I’m going to remove some things from his tank keep it simple until he get’s a little bigger and I’m going to try and get a bigger tank in the summer. He just ate 5 more roaches one more escaped is it okay to leave those 3 roaches in the tank ?

Yes you can but it's better to take them out- roaches usually don't bother the dragon it's the crickets that need to come out
