Nervous about keeping him warm enough!

We are getting a beardie for Christmas! I have only seen a picture of him and he doesn't even have a name yet! But I am already worried about keeping him warm this winter in upstate NY. Last night we had a wind storm and lost power for a few hours and I was panicking about keeping my beardie warm even though he is not here yet.
What do you think about keeping some of those heat packs that they use for shipping them on hand in case we lose power? Will they be warm enough to keep him comfortable for 24 hours? And the crickets too. We don't lose power very often but I just want to be prepared. We do have a generator but it is not hooked up to the house for automatic use.

Any advice for these situations is welcome. Thanks!

Well, losing power does suck. About the only thing you could do if you lost power is use a heat pack. I would use it in conjunction with a blanket or something and make sure it doesn't heat up too hot for them though.

I've used hot hands wrapped in a dish/hand towel. They get and stay pretty warm for about 12 hours.

they also warm up fairly quickly if you cuddle them close to your skin, like over the t-shirt but under the blanket. Also when they cool down I find Franklin tends to "feel" colder to my touch than he actually is? That's why digi thermometers work so good- you can guestimate with a finger or something but your body is already at 98 degrees so guessing a temp isn't as easy as like guessing a weight or something.

Hi! I'm also in WNY, and had the same concerns. Took the advice of the good people here and stocked up on a few handwarmers just in case (I should say when) the power goes. I've also put the viv in our "man cave" which has a small wood stove. Snuggling up real close is also a pretty good back-up plan.

At first I would use a gas generator , if that is not a option -
I bought a 12v car inverter that makes around 750 WATTS. It will run either a 24Watt under the tank heater, basking light, and or heating pad for a pretty long time. If necessary I would recharge it with my truck. ( A little bit of work, but I would never want my Beardie cold !!)

Franklin is such a weirdo, i swear to gawd sometimes it seems like he WANTS to be cold and I find it most puzzling. Sometimes he just runs around all over, I turn my head and He's in the kitchen on the cold linolium in some dark corner being all dark and cold when I just tried to put him in a warm place for like 20 minutes. He's such a weirdo, but I guess he knows more about what he wants then I do sometimes...or something... :banghead:

We actually had all out power lines buried a few years ago so we hardly ever lose it but I did pick up a few of the jumbo hand warmers, you can get them at any sports store (and probably gas stations too). They can get pretty hot so if you do need to use them make sure to monitor it a bit. I think they're about $1 for the regular hand warmers and probably $3 max for the bigger sizes.

Freddie wants to be out of her cage whenever we are home. Her belly is white when we get home, but as soon as she sees us she turns gray.
When we pick her up she turns white again. She will be cold to the touch and still want to be out with us lol

We also live in upstate NY. I bought an entire box of hand warmers to have on hand for our 4 beardies in case the power is knocked out by one of our notorious snow or ice storms. I remember power outages lasting a couple of days in some areas up here. I also have purchased a couple of old fashioned type hot water bottles from a near-by medical supply store. I have a propane camp stove and can heat water when needed, that is another back up I have.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
