Nefarian is growing fast

It all started with a tarantula about a year and a half ago. I just wanted an interesting, low maintenance pet.

While surfing the tarantula forums I kept seeing stuff about crested geckos. Ohhh I think; "They're cute and easy to take care of!". Then I couldn't decide if I wanted a crested or a leopard or a gargoyle.... so of course by now I have 5 cresteds, 3 leos and a gargoyle. (plus a few of the tarantulas!)

With my new love of geckos I of had to hit up the local reptile expo that came to town a few weeks ago. That's where I fell in love all over again.

I'd read a little about bearded dragons, but honestly with the heating requirements, the veggies, the size of them I wrote it all off as too much effort and thought I'd stick to my geckos.

Then at the show there were beardies everywhere. I think I knew the battle was over when we were at a table that had a big adult just stretched out under a lamp. Everyone was petting him and all around, but he didn't care, he loved the attention. I picked up one of the babies in a tub next to him and the little girl just curled up in my hand and went to sleep. Right in the middle of all the noise and stuff!!

Figuring I have a empty 40 gallon long tank at home I gave in and started asking the breeder some questions. This is where I wish I'd thought more about what I've read online.

He tells me that with a 40 I should get a male and a female because I can just partition the tank with cardboard and when they get too big for that they'll live together just fine. I had my doubts, but figured a breeder would know his stuff and took home my new babies, Ony and Nef. (yes, I'm a video game geek)

Well!! I got them all set up and hit the internet to find out the guy was just trying to sell another baby because what he told me about living requirements was a plain old lie. Lucky for me I have a friend nearby who was in the market for another reptile pet and agreed to take one of them and give it a great home next month.

We got the tank all setup and have been getting schooled in beardies a little more every day. For example, no one tells you they can teleport!! Fast little guys when they want to be!

A week later they were both happy as can be, eating, pooping, sunning and running around. Then they discovered the cardboard. I looked over and they were on top of each other under the basking light. I chased Ony back to her side and fixed it. Looked over again and this time Nef was on her side hanging out. After try 3 where they just decided to switch sides I gave up and figured they should be OK together for a few weeks. Of course we've been watching carefully for any signs of aggression, thankfully they've been little angels.

It's been a busy, expensive 2 weeks but we're now just in love with them. It's going to be hard to give one up even, but there just is no room for another tank. We each take one out and sit on the couch and the little guys just burrow into our hands and relax there. They look so happy when they get attention! Oh and they LOVE getting sprayed. It's like the sound scares them for a second and then they feel the water and I swear they smile.

Anyway, sorry for the book! As you can tell I'm pretty fascinated with the little ones and I like to babble. Now for the good stuff - pictures!

They were finishing up a shed when I took these, so don't mind the lose scales lol.

Here's Ony, she's slightly bigger than her little brother.

And our little guy Nef. He gets a deathgrip on a finger and just will not let go. After these I sat around for a good half an hour with him just sitting there napping. We've gotten more attached to him, so when the time comes we'll probably be giving Ony to my friend and keeping him.

I'll have more soon I'm sure, and I'll probably use this as a place to babble about every adorable little thing they do on a daily basis :)

I also have a bunch of pictures of the gecko army if anyone is interested, I wasn't sure if I should include them in here.

Hahah poor Ony is shedding again and she's turning herself inside out trying to get it off her back. I hear her running around, but every time I look over she stops and looks at me like she doesn't want to be seen like this. Better give her a spray to help.

hello and welcome
Your babies sure are cute!
I really wouldn't put them together unless you want babies :)

Thanks :) They're so adorable, I can't believe how attached we are already.

They're not staying together long enough to make babies thank goodness. Ony will be going to a new home in another week or 2 because we don't have room for a second tank. For the moment we're just kind of babysitting her.

:laughing6: They sure can move fast when they want to !! That's a great way to put it though :)
I'm glad you've fallen for the beardies... they are a LOT of fun. Glad you are on here and learning about them. Unfortunately there are more breeders out there that are just in it for money than the good breeders... and there tend to be a lot of them that show up at the expo shows. Luckily there are great breeders out there though.

As hard as it will be for you to give one up ( and I totally understand that) I'm glad you are opting for that instead of keeping them together long term... they really are solitary creatures and if you can't handle two tanks everyone will be happier with that decision. Good luck with that!! I don't envy you for making that decision :) Hopefully they will continue to be nice enough to each other over the next week or so and you won't have to deal with any bite issues.
Enjoy your new little friends and please post all the babbling you like (AND PICTURES) Looking forward to hearing more about them.

Thanks :) It'll be tough to let Ony go for sure, we've gotten pretty attached to both of them. On the other hand I'm almost looking forward to having just Nef and being able to spoil him and not worry as much about the 2 of them together.

So far no fighting or signs of aggression at all. It's pretty funny to watch them though. Nef is smaller and has a TON of energy almost all the time. So Ony will be just basking and he's running circles around the wood she's on. Then she'll give him this "calm down you spaz" look and he stops and does the arm wave a few times. As soon as she closes her eyes he's off and running around again.

Every once in a while Nef will decide he wants to cuddle with her. He'll inch up to where she's basking and after waving a few times hop onto her back and sit there. The thing is he never stays still, so a minute later he decides to run again and usually causes them both to fall off the log. Ony is good about it though, she just wanders off, or climbs back up.

Overall they're doing great together. I think it helps that I have a few pieces of driftwood for the basking area, so there's at least 3 or so "good spots" and they don't have to share.

I got a big order or dubia roaches in too, so there's always roaches in the bowl and they never have to compete over food. Nef is too funny eating them though... Ony sees movement, goes to the bowl and eats her fill. Nef will usually see it while running around, stop to eat one or 2 and then forget about it until he happens to trip over the bowl again later. Too adorable.

They're both getting used to us now, so it's not a 10 minute game of chase the dragon when it's time to come out for attention. Nef is almost to the point where he'll walk up on my hand, but mostly he just looks at it until I pick him up.

My camera had a dead battery last night but we did measure Nef while he was out and he's about 6.25" right now. Ony is just over 7. I have a scale coming in next week, so I'll be able to start actually documenting growth properly.

I'm so excited for you! They are just adorable, and I'm sure you'll be happy with your decision to keep Nef. He sounds like a lot of fun. Congratulations!

awww it sounds like Ony and Nef are a lot of fun to watch. Nef's spazziness is pretty cute. It definitely sounds like he'll have a lot of personality. Glad they are mostly getting along and Ony doesn't seem too annoyed by Nef's antics.
Congrats on the dubia's- they are a great feeder and i know they are chowing on them. Very funny that Nef can only eat a few at at time before he has to run around :)
Congrats on Nef getting used (almost) to being handled. Keep up the good work and he'll be begging to get up and out in no time :D
Looking forward to more tales and pics when the camera isnt' dead!

lmfao, I was thinking yesterday when I decided to pick up my dragon in the near future what to name him/her and thought of the same thing, guess I will have to name mine Sapphiron or Malygos now hahaha

Thanks for the kind words :) I'm really shocked she puts up with him so well most of the time. He's a crazy little bugger haha.

Dckaz don't forget Alexstrasza or Sindragosa or maybe Deathwing for a boy lol.

Poor Ony was basking and I was mean enough to scoop her out and take pictures of her before she even realized she was off her log.

They both just pigged out on some roaches and now Nef is waving at me. Time to give him some attention!

Edit later in the evening

So - how do you annoy the living daylights out of 2 bearded dragon babies??

BATH TIME!

Hahaha I don't think they liked it very much, but I'm all worried they're not getting enough hydration. They're both basking to warm up and calm down now :)

Nef got measured tonight - 6.75!! He's put on a solid half an inch this week. He's getting rounder too :) I have a picture I have to get off the camera of him using Ony's head as an armrest. He still waves at her, but I'd swear he's the dominant one.

Ony goes off to her new home tomorrow. It'll be sad to see her go, but I know they'll take good care of her. They have 2 full grown iguanas, and I know they're pretty close for care needs. I talked to the guy for ages on the phone today about feeders and stuff

It's sad to see her go, but happy that I'll be able to take even better care of little Nef.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
