Need to replace my UVB fixture

So, the UVB fixture (a T8) that I got with my Loki's setup (off Craigslist) is homemade and I am not sure about the quality of the light even though I am using the correct bulb, plus I'm afraid it's going to poop out any minute since you have to wiggle wires to make it work. Probably not too safe, either. I would like to get a new fixture (but I can't spend a ton of money on it). I have a 40gal breeder tank with a screen top that slides off. I have the screen top permanently off so that the UVB isn't cut by the screen, and I really like having it off because of the easy access. (Right now I have the homemade fixture propped up on the edge of the tank against the wall, held in place with gorilla tape. Classy. 8)) I was wondering if there is a decent T8 hood that can be mounted securely to the edge of the tank rather than just sitting on top of the screen. I don't want to mount a fixture inside the tank, I want it to shine down from above.

If you were in my situation, is there a particular hood or fixture that you would get? I'm asking for hand-holding and I apologize for that, but I don't trust my judgment and I don't want to compromise my beardie's health through ignorance. :?

I ended up buying a Zoo Med Reptisun hood to replace the homemade fixture. With the reflector I think he's getting more of the light than before. Wish I could afford a UVB meter to make sure everything is good, but I'll have to rely on his health for that and just make sure I replace the bulb at least every six months.

I'm sorry this post got overlooked. It was a good idea to replace the fixture with a new one. That will help ensure optimum output from the bulb. Did you get a new bulb as well? The reflector will help maximize output as well. I have the top off of my tank too and it allows about double the UVB exposure inside the tank. I found that I need to keep the basking light a little higher as well (it's on an adjustable lamp stand so no big deal). As long as the T8 UVB bulb is about 6'' from the basking spot, it should be OK in terms of exposure.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
