Need Help with PETCO petition ..UPDATE new problems!10/21/09

Just so you know… I don’t take it personally. It is because of crappy store managers and horrible associates that make me want to move up in the company. I would love to be able to visit stores like that and bust them for poor animal care. I would like to help. I am telling you that if you e-mail me the final petition I will send it to the director of animal care for the company. I would love it if they got rid of the sand. Baby Beardies and geckos eat it because they don’t know any better. I just don’t want you to think that all stores are like that. The company does care about animals… But I agree that some of the care might be a little outdated. Let’s fix it! No need for argument.
The store connected to the DMV is in Leavenworth I THINK.

I didn't mean for you to...just saying other states than KS are having the same problems...that's all. I'm trying to "bust" them, but the worst case of abuse I saw, I couldn't get a good pic of the baby with my cell phone. Next time, I'm taking my camera. Also, no, we don't have the best humane societies or organizations to deal with these problems...it takes awhile to find someone who will look into it and even then it's difficult to get a hold of them. That's why this petition means so much to me. It is possible that there is a DMV attached to a PETCO...not close to me though, so I can't say yes or no.
Thank you for seeing eye to eye with me on the arguing and getting these problems fixed.

If you give me your personal e-mail address maybe I can send you some information about who could go check out the animal conditions of that store. Also I need to know the location of the store and if you have the name of any managers you talked to I can turn them in as well. I have worked for several retail stores and sometimes the customer complaints get lost in the shuffle. But if we send our concerns to the proper people maybe we can get some sh!t done. My regional animal manager is in my store every month. But in the Midwest there are fewer stores, therefore their RCAC must cover much more ground. Therefore it is possible that they have more relaxed animal care.

I am sorry if you personally felt attacked but surely you could see how it clearly sounded like you were calling me a Liar,cant you?As previously stated I think this part may have been a misinterpretation because of this being an internet conversation rather then in person or on the phone so obviously tones will get lost in the typing translation.As for bashing the employees, I have NEVER bashed the employees, quite the opposite actually.Did you read the entire thread?Many times I have clearly stated that it isnt the employees and while yes there are some bad ones there are just as many good ones who can do nothing because coorporate has tied their hands.Also you must understand your post came off like saying that it isnt Petcos policy instead of just your store policy.So again miscommunication and try to see my side of things here and how these comments could set me off.I put this together to help beardies and I didnt just let it go at that.I speak to Petco daily in an effort to get my message across sometimes for hours but although I finally seem to be making progress I had to swim through an endless sea of BS to get there.So when you posted the way you did I took it to heart and was very offended.Now as for the petition content, EVERY statement there is true and yes I and others have had the unfortunate experience to see a sub adult and in one case an adult in with juvies and babies.While it is a rare event it still did happen and the story I posted in the last comment was something that happens continuously which is why I focused more on that then the adult thing.As for adoptions I am aware of Petcos stand on adoption however the stores in my area NEVER adopt out herps(I even found a painted turtle one day in the street a while back and brought it to them before I knew better and they slapped a price tag on it.I was horrified I figured they would just adopt it out as I couldnt keep him at the time).While I am very pleased to hear that you and beardielover360 seem to have stores that are doing right I want to ensure they ALL do and that they are not blocked from doing the right thing in the future.So lets just let by gones be by gones and move on as this thread is not about us but about saving beardies which it seems we are both doing in our own way.

I am again glad to hear your store is doing the right thing and will gladly accept any help you can offer to help change the husbandry policies.Feel free to PM me and we can discuss options or you can just grab the link to the petition thats on the thread and deliver it to whom ever you think will have some influence.As for the PETA thing I have already stated I want to keep them out of this because I personally dont agree with some of their methods/mission statements and while I am glad Petco tries to help protect animal rights I can think of better ways :wink: A few thousands sheets of repticarpet possibly
As for the company I am sorry but YES that is exactly what I think.While agree there are some bad managers, the company is the one who sets the standards and its also the company who makes it impossible to get through to someone who can actually get something done.Its also the company according to cust svce who's policy is that its better for the animal to die in the store then be given to me to try to save because they cant write him off if he dies in my possession instead of theirs so I will believe they care when I see some results and they do the right thing.As for not giving up,trust me on this in case you couldnt already tell.This has now become a mission and I will not give up until the problems are corrected.I dont care if I am 100 years old,in diapers eating food through a straw I will still be shaking my cane and if they really tick me off I may even chuck my dentures at them but what I will NEVER do is give up.

Ok can we get back to saving the Beardies now? :wink:

I have had my baby beardie for about 6 weeks and went to my local Petco the first week or so and then began to boycott due to the treatment of their beardies. Well I was in a hurry today and had to go there as opposed to PetsMart, and I was SOOOO happy to see that they had changed the substrate from sand to carpet at that location (Houston, Tx on Weslayan Street)! Small victory, one store at a time.......

I was told the other day "take a demotion, or find another job" because I am dating a groomer, and I am a manager.. we were both hired together, and they knew we're dating. the old GM that was fired (for improper animal care, aaaaaaathankyou) didnt care, the new GM.. who is dating/has a child with the Grooming manager of another store doesnt want me to be a manager and date someone who is in a completely different WORLD. Any lawyers on here? I kinda want to file a civil suit

Good luck to you. A lot of companies have policies against fraternization within the same store or between different levels of authority. The old GM may not have enforced the policy but that doesn't mean the company can't enforce it now. Especially if you were informed of the policy when you were hired.

I would agree that one of you should find another PETCO to work for or another job. ANY retail job would not let you work in the same store. It is a “conflict of interest” and a lawyer would tell you the same thing. If you were a team lead that was being treated different than the grooming manager because they were dating the store manager you would have a case. That is why you can’t work in the same store. its sad to say, but i would never buy a reptile from any chain pet store, because of the sickly way their treated. its almost guaranteed there will be problems.

i hope this petition goes somewhere and im glad somone is putting this into action
