Need help finding Ponazuril

My bearded has a high coccidia count and the vet thinks we should treat it. I'm impressed they appear to know enough that Ponazuril is now the preferred treatment over Albon, but the problem is they have tried for three days now to find it and can't. They've tried every horse outlet they know of in the area trying to get a small amount they could prepare for a bearded, but no luck. Anyone know of a place that could supply me doses for a BD? Thanks so much.

Hello,

Great that you might get the opportunity to use Ponazuril. It is not easily found, but here are a couple of links to have your vet check out to purchase it from. It is QUITE expensive for the entire tube so that is why it is not used more often because now they will have a lot of it left over after dosing for your dragon.
How was he going to dose it? Normally, it is given at 20mg/kg one time only, or at the MOST 2 doses. It is specifically an anti-coccidial agent & is highly effective so it just is not a medication that is used long term such as Albon.

Okay, so I'm going to answer my own question in the hope that it may some day help someone else with the same problem. My vet finally found a compounding pharmacy out of Scottsdale Arizona that is able to prepare Ponazuril for a lizard. Their name is Diamond Back Drugs (http://www.diamondbackdrugs.com). They are able to produce a preparation with a dose of .1 ml and will sell you 10ml of solution for $24. That gives you far more than you need, but they say anything less is just too difficult to work with. Oh well, at least I'll have it around until it expires in case I need it again. So, if anyone ever finds this post through a search or whatever, hopefully it will provide the name of a supplier you can tell your vet about if needed.

Hello,

That is good your vet found a company that would sell less because it does not take much that is for sure!
So, did you already give him the dose of the Ponazuril yet? That is awesome though, the dosage is great. You will definitely have tons left over though. It should keep for quite awhile though, a couple of years if you keep it out of sunlight & heat.
Let us know how he does on it. This should totally knock out the coccidia as well.

It's on order. I'll post a follow up in a few days after dosing. Thanks for the interest.

Just thought I'd update...

One dose of Ponazuril down, second one tomorrow. Two doses of Panacur down, one week apart. Things look good. She's now pooped two days in a row, which is a first for about three weeks. She continues to devour her greens, but has been slightly off still on the crickets. I'm not worrying in the least about that though, as I weighed her at 160 grams one week and then 187 the next, so she seems to be growing well. I think there's a good chance she's just displacing some crickets with more greens as she seems to be even more fond of them lately, and if that's the case, all the better. Hopefully things will continue on the upswing. I sure do hope so, because the cleaning of everything with ammonia and boiling rocks sure was no fun. Not something I want to be repeating frequently.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
